Corrections to Recent Articles on NWRL

NWRL

Recently two articles appeared in local newspapers about NWRL finances which need correction.

One appeared in the North Star News (8/23/12) and the Northern Watch (8/25/12) to say NWRL hasn't purchased any new books for the Hallock or Karlstad libraries for the past three years. This is not true. All seven libraries and two LINK sites in  NWRL receive new materials annually. Serving the public with new materials is an essential service in public library systems and it would never be cut from the budget.

The second appeared in the Roseau Times Region (2/18/12), the Northern Watch (2/25/12) and then again in an article that went state-wide (8/22/12) to say Rod Kjersten dropped a bombshell when he noted the NWRL will be broke in about the next three years due to current state funding."

It was rephrased in the most recent article to say "it was described as "dropping a bombshell" - the news that a library system serving seven small cities in northwest Minnesota would be broke in three years."

In reality, NWRL has a fund balance that represents 68% of the operating budget. This was accumulated through many years of careful budgeting. Like any organization, reductions in services had to be made in NWRL to address tight budgets, but this is far from "going broke." It's called good management.
