Fun with statistics and e-books!

NWRL
In June of 2011 NWRL was excited to add an e-book an e-audio collection to our services. This is has been a huge success for our libraries. We currently have 592 titles in the collection; 223 of them are audiobooks and 369 of the titles are e-books. We are slowly adding more books each week.

Anyone with a NWRL card can check out e-books from our virtual library. We thought it would be fun to show you just how much this area of our services has grown in the short time that we have been offering this service.

This graph shows how patron checkouts from June 2011 to March 2012.

From June 6, 2011 to September 27, 2011 we had 1,196 checkouts.
On September 28, 2011 Amazon announced that Kindles would be compatible with Overdrive, our provider of ebooks. This created a huge jump in the amount of check-outs.
The most popular gift for Christmas of 2011 was an e-reader of some sort. This again created a jump in the amount of check outs of e-books.
From September 28, to December 31, 2011 total check outs were  1,584.

This graph shows the number of patrons using our virtual library for the first time f

Get Swifts!

Thief River Falls Library

With an average flying speed of 50 mph, they're one of the fastest fliers in the bird world - and they spend all day in the air, coming to rest only at night.  They feed on aerial plankton - catching beetles, wasps and bugs in their beaks as they fly.  They even drink on the wing.

During migration, you might see these amazing little birds flying over chimneys at dusk in large tornado-like flocks. Then suddenly they swirl in descent as they head into the chimney to roost for the night.  But unfortunately, Chimney Swifts are facing extinction.  Their populations have dropped over 50% in the past 40 years.

On March 26th, Agassiz Audubon Society's Heidi Hughes will be at the Thief River Falls Library to introduce you to these incredible birds and how you can help them by building a Chimney Swift Tower.  She will provide chimney swift tower construction plans and a list of the materials you need to build one.
