Birdwatching 101

Red Lake Falls Library
When the weather outside is frightful... it's time to sit by the window and watch the drama as it unfolds in your yard.  Yes, backyard birdwatching has become fashionable.  You can strike up a conversation with strangers about the birds in your yard.  And knowing how to identify the birds makes it more fun.
Heidi Hughes, author of "The Expert's Guide to Backyard Birdfeeding" - and new manager of Agassiz Audubon Society' Center in Warren - will show you what you need to know to identify the birds in your neighborhood.

Bring your binoculars and bird guidebook.   If you don't own binocs and a book, she'll show you how to select the one that's right for you.

She'll also provide tips on how to photograph wild birds, how to select and use iPod apps and how to keep a list of the birds you've spotted - at the eBird website on the internet.
Bring your questions - she'll have the answers for you.

Bird Counting

Thief River Falls and Warren-Godel Library
Calling All Birdwatchers! Join the Flock - Count the Birds This Holiday Season It started back in 1970, when a handful of intrepid birdwatchers ventured-out over the holidays to help Agassiz Audubon Society count birds for the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC). Over the years, more than 300 people have participated in the Warren CBC, counting a total of nearly 39,000 birds (of 32 species) with the temperature ranging from -30 to +32 F. This week, Agassiz Audubon announced they're going out to count again on Monday, January 2, 2012 - the official "Monday after New Year's Day" holiday.

You don't have to be an expert at bird identification to participate. In fact, you don't have to know anything about birds. This year's adventure is open to anyone and everyone - regardless of skill level - from the "just curious" beginner to the expert birdwatcher. Not to worry - the count accuracy is assured by having new participants join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher.

Here's how the CBC works: Volunteer bird-counters follow specified routes through a designated 15-mile diameter circle - by car or on foot, on skis or snowshoes, or even from the comfort of their homes. "We're looking for people who want to learn more about birds - and are willing to keep records of what they see at backyard bird feeding stations," says Heidi Hughes, this year's "count compiler."

Hughes will present a free public program at the Thief River Falls Library, Monday, December 12, at 6:30 p.m., and at the Warren-Godel Library on Thursday, December 15, at 6:30 p.m.  on how identify winter birds and how to keep records. For more information, call 218-745-5663 or send an email to
agassizaudubon@gmail.com).
