Band Show and Tell

Roseau

Area youngsters enjoyed another special treat at the Roseau Public Library. For the third summer in a row, Librarian Charles Erickson invited Roseau Band Director Nolan Hauta to host "Band Show and Tell." This year, thirteen young people all experienced making sounds on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone and tuba.

They talked about high sounds and low sounds and then helped each other make those sounds. They also learned that it is fun to try new things. They talked about the importance of not getting frustrated when something is new, to always try ones hardest and to never give up. They were very excited to say they will be in band when they are old enough.

"Band Show and Tell" is one of countless Roseau Public Library programs, offerings and opportunities for young people during the summer as well as all year-round. Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming events at the Roseau Public Library.

Author Rhonda Fincher

 Thief River Falls Library

Newfolden, MN, native Rhonda Fincher stopped by the library on Wednesday, July 6 to talk about her book Good Night Kendrick, I Love You. There was a great turn out of about 50 people who came to hear Rhonda speak, buy her book, and get the book signed.

Her book shares her journey from loss and grief to recovery. Seventh-grader Kendrick Fincher loved sports and was excited to start football. Tragically, on the first day of summer of football practice, Kendrick suffered heat stroke. He spent 18 days ICU in a drug-induced coma. On the 18th day, he died of multiple organ failure. Rhonda stared writing Kendrick letters as he lay in his hospital bed. These would be the basis for Good Night Kendrick, I Love You.

There are many books written about grief. What makes Fincher's unique is that it was written while the tragic events surrounding Kendrick's death were taking place and during the months following his death.

Fincher is the co-founder and executive director of the Kendrick Fincher's Hydration Foundation, wich educates children, athletes and parents on the importance of proper hydration.
