Nancy Tankersley

'Appletini Time' $2,400-

Nancy Tankersley is one of our most popular artists.  She paints both in the studio and outdoors. Tankersley says, "I think it is important for contemporary artists to capture the land and the people as they are today. I do try to show the beauty of the ordinary. People engaged in their occupations, enjoying their leisure time by eating, shopping or just strolling down a street... all of these are ordinary subjects which can make extraordinary paintings. I try to paint from life as much as possible so that my work has the authenticity that comes from capturing a moment in time."

She has had many awards in her career including First Place and Best in Show at the Art League in Alexandria; twice winner of the Brittain Banghart Award for Figure at the Academy Art Museum, Best in Show at Chesapeake College and has been juried into international competitions such as the annual Salon International, the American Impressionist Society Annual Exhibit, and Oil Painters

'A Little Cheese' $2,000-

of America. In 2008, the artist was honored to be selected as one of two painters from the Eastern Shore to be part of a show titled "Making Art: Explorations in Process"at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland which included notable American artists from the 19th and 20th centuries and works borrowed from major museums including the National Gallery of Art and the Brandywine River Museum. In 2004, her painting "The Pink Scarf" was chosen as one of twelve to represent the 3,000 member Art League of Alexandria during their 50 Year Anniversary Gala celebration.

'Sylvester' by Marty Goldstein
 Sylvester Goes Down Under

We work cooperatively with all the local galleries.  We believe in cooperation, not competition.  We don't represent any artists that are already represented in other local galleries.  We are happy to direct clients to other galleries when they are looking for something that we don't have.

One day another gallery owner asked us if we'd like to carry the whimiscal bronze dogs of Marty Goldstein.  He had represented Marty for quite some time but recently had brought on a new sculptor with African sculptures and the two really didn't look good together in his gallery.  We were delighted.  Marty's work is fun and refreshing.

Two days after we received Marty's work a couple from Australia walked into our gallery late one evening and fell in love with 'Sylvester'.  They have two great danes and thought 'Sylvester' would be a perfect addition.  So 'Sylvester' headed down under to be with his new family.

For Mayor

BoJanglesMr. Bo Jangles' Column™
(This is the best part)

I recently learned from an avid fan that some cities have dog mayors.  So I'm starting a petition to become the dog mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea.  After all, we have the most dog friendly city in the world so if anyone has a dog mayor it should be us.  Please email me your support!

I hear our new Mayor, Jason Burnett, is very likable so hopefully he won't mind sharing the limelight!  Congratulations, Jason.

  SequoiaSequoia's Column

I just turned 3. I had a wonderful birthday. Mom and Dad took me for my first train ride. I loved it. I'm a big fan of 'Dinosaur Train' so this was just fabulous.
Mom captured it on video on her phone.  I watch it all the time.  She didn't realize that I can turn her phone on, take off the lock, push the camera app and then choose my video!   Mom, I am 3, of course, I can do all that!

Fun and Interesting Facts About Carmel-by-the-Sea

I finally am letting my DaDa write a column too.  He loves Carmel-by-the-Sea so it seems appropriate that he writes about it.

What exactly is Big Sur?

Big Sur is a 90-mile stretch of coastline that runs from Point Lobos, three miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, to San Simeon, home of the William Randolph Hearst Castle. One of the rivers that runs through the area was referred to as El Rio Grande del Sur (The Big River of the South) by the Spanish mariners who occupied the area in the early 1800's. Now known as Big Sur this coastline is one of the greatest meetings of land and sea in the world.

The Santa Lucia Mountains drop from heights in excess of 5,000 feet down to the churning waters and rugged, rocky coast of the Pacific. The mountains are so rugged that no primary roads cross the range. There are only two east-west roads that connect the Coast Highway 1 with the interior Highway 101...Route 68 from Monterey to Salinas on the north end and Route 41 from San Simeon over to Paso Robles on the south end.

The majority of the mountainous area is known as the Ventana Wilderness. This is a spectacular area with incredible views from the trails. Many surprises can be found along the trails. The Soberanes Canyon Trail starts on the Coast Highway and meanders east through a cactus grove then into a dense redwood forest with a tranquil stream.

The small hamlet of Big Sur is located near Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. In the hamlet you can still find the hippie ambiance of the 60's in the small cafes and galleries.

While most of Big Sur is accessible, nearly 9,000 acres are privately owned by Jim Hill's El Sur Ranch. The area on both sides of the Coast Highway from just north of the Point Sur Lighthouse down to Andrew Molera State park belong to El Sur Ranch and have since the 1800's. No trespassing is permitted on any of this land since it is a working cattle ranch.

There have been books written about the history, beauty, views, hikes and treasures to be found in Big Sur. Please call us at the gallery if you would like more information.
