Dee Beard Dean has been painting all her life.  She was raised in the Amish countryside of rural Indiana and studied art at Grand Rapids College, Kendall College of Art and Design, and the New York Academy of Art.  After marriage, she moved to the Florida Keys where she became a professional painter and passed the gift of painting to her two children, Terry Sargent and John Beard, both of whom are now successful artists. Before gaining recognition as a portrait and landscape painter Dee was a well-known fashion designer manufacturing her own clothing line with a national label.

Dee is a passionate and prolific artist who has studied with many renowned artists and is nationally recognized for her painterly landscapes and her expertise in watercolors, oils and pastels. Her greatest inspirations have come from painting en plein air (or on location) where her eye for color and composition, and her elevated senses, guide her hand in creating paintings filled with evocative light and dramatic shadows.

She founded the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAP-SE), a professional organization of acclaimed plein air artists living and working in the southeastern United States. Dee's workshops are in great demand, offering painting instruction in this country and in beautiful locales around the world.

She is also well known for her portraits and has done many noteworthy commissions. Her work has received many awards at juried art competitions, and has been published in regional and national journals. Dee is represented in fine art galleries around the country. She resides in Davidson, North Carolina with her husband, Dr. Nicolai Chalfa.  Her first book "Painter By Providence" has been published.

Collectors are snapping up the Shulak paintings at auction.  Her pointillism pieces are continuing to fetch the highest prices with her other pieces close behind.

Pointillism is an extremely time consuming process where a painting is created solely by dots.  Seurat developed this technique in 1886.  Seurat's work greatly influenced the art community.  His most famous piece took over 2 years to complete.  Many of his pieces are on display at museums all over the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.  Even Van Gogh did a self portrait in pointillism.

Shulak's pointillism technique is excellent and I expect that these prices will continue to rise dramatically.  A small Seurat just sold at auction for $2,098,500-.  If you compare Shulak's work to Seurat, you will be impressed.  You just can't find top quality pointillism like this.

Lindsey Bittner Graham Wins Another Award

Lindsey Bittner Graham was an award finalist at the Raymar Art Painting 5th Annual Competition.

Juror of Awards Comments:

I am very impressed with the brush work and draftsmanship. The bold varieties in brush work, yet having transition to keep form, is very impressive. The sculpting of the planes really shows understanding and brings a lot of power. Notice how Lindsey countered the arch of the neck with strong horizontals in the background. - Scott Christensen

In addition Bittner Graham was invited to the 2012 Coors Western Art Silent Auction.  All 4 of her paintings were acquired with several going far above asking price.  One of the happy winners was the Executive VP of Sotheby's in NY.

SouthwestArt wrote a wonderful article about it as well.  Click here to read.

 Love Is In The Air

A lovely couple came in during the American Impressionist Society show and together purchased a lovely painting by Blanche McAlister Harris.  Then on the last day of the show, the wife called to acquire her husband's favorite painting as a surprise for Christmas.  Several weeks later the husband called and wanted to see if his wife's favorite painting was available.  The show was over at this point but luckily the painting was still available.  So the husband acquired the painting for his wife for Christmas.  Neither one had any idea and what a great surprise they had on Christmas morning.

(This is the best part)

Carmel-by-the-Sea in January is wonderful.  There isn't any snow and it is a bit more calm than the rest of the year.  I realize that I have a very wonderful life.  I go to the beach most mornings and run in the ocean.  But the best part of my day is when I get to see you at the gallery!

I got a very cool bike for Christmas which I love.  I spent two whole days on it and wore my helmet for 12 hours straight.  The holidays are over.  I'm back to work at the gallery computer.  I get a lot of work done here.  I'm the behind the scenes guy!

Fun and Interesting Facts About Carmel-by-the-Sea

I finally am letting my DaDa write a column too.  He loves Carmel-by-the-Sea so it seems appropriate that he writes about it.

Is Clint still the mayor here?

 Mayor Eastwood

One of the most frequently asked questions we hear is whether Clint Eastwood is still the mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea.  No, he is not.  Clint was our mayor for a two-year term from 1986-1988.  During his two year period as mayor, Clint said that it was not the launch pad for larger political ambitions.  His concern was strictly with Carmel-by-the-Sea.  In his words, "We got rid of quite a lot of punitive attitudes on the council and helped people get things done.  We got things built -- beach walkways, a library annex which had been waiting 25 years, and so on.  I approached it from a business point of view, not a political one."  During his two-year tenure, he successfully made it easier to build or remodel property, got a tourist parking lot built, rescued the historic Mission Ranch from developers and opened a children's annex to the city library.  Another much appreciated change made by Mayor Eastwood was to overturn the law prohibiting the sale and eating of ice cream cones on public streets.  Our two and a half year old son Sequoia is most appreciative of this act.
