Nashville native Lori Putnam is one of America's most sought after impressionist painters and instructors. Her expressive brushwork, strong sense of composition and ability to interpret the subject matter in a natural manner have distinguished her as a nationally award winning contemporary artist. In 2011 alone, her work won awards in California, Florida, Georgia, and Ireland. Putnam has built a substantial following of admirers, including many of her own instructors, including Scott L. Christensen and Quang Ho. A member of many national organizations, she is incoming Vice President for the American Impressionist Society for 2012. She participates in many of the nation's top plein-air events and exhibitions, and patrons and fine art appreciators have taken notice, making her one of America's top artists to collect. Area painters will want to save the date for Lori's Carmel-by-the-Sea workshop to be held August 31-September 2 of next year.  Contact Mountainsong Galleries for further details.

Mountainsong Galleries was proud to host the American Impressionist Society's 12th Annual Juried Event recently. Now, as an exciting encore to that event, we bring you the best of the best in American Impressionism. Nearly 50 artists who were juried into the AIS event have joined our gallery and we now have multiple works from each of these artists. These are the artists whose show pieces sold and could have sold multiple times and those who were honored by winning awards during the show. Available works may be seen by going to our home page and clicking on AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM. You will find over 250 pieces...figuratives, boats, cityscapes, seascapes, landscapes, interiors, animals, florals and still lives. "It's Getting Fishy Around Here"

Most of you know about the beautiful Koi fish lamps we have available. But do you know what these cute little Koi are really doing? Well, here's the inside scoop. From a Koi's perspective, "coy" means "to avoid people (because they're always trying to bait us onto a hook) and social situations (like being the main course at a dinner party). So, our Koi have turned the tables and THEY are luring passersby into our gallery. So how are they doing? Fish sales are up...WAY up. Some days I think we sell more fish than Flaherty's.

Seriously, though, people love our fish.  A story that touched our hearts was a family who recently came in. Mom and Dad purchased a grouping of three hanging pendant Koi for their living room. Their daughter, who was with them, decided that she would like a fish hanging in her home also, so she acquired one as well. It was nice to see a family enjoying art together.  Recently the chef of an upscale restaurant in Boulder purchased several hanging pendant Koi lamps for his restaurant.  A client in New York is lighting her theater room with several Koi on wall sconces.

(This is the best part)

Here is some fan mail of sorts I received:

 Hey, Mr. Bojangles -

Nadia Sharrar has only been receiving newsletters for a few months and wins?

I've been reading these since "Day One"

Mr. Bo, you were suppose to "fix" the drawing, so that I'd win!  What good are you if you can't "fix" a drawing?

Signed Bourbon (name changed to protect the not-so-innocent)

Dear Bourbon,

I'm not that kind of dog.  I can't be bribed with food and short walks to the market.

Happy Holidays!

Mr. Bo Jangles

I have decided I no longer need to go to bed at 8 like Mom thinks.  The other night I really didn't want to sleep yet so I called to Mom to see if I could go to the potty.  (I know that is Mom's weakness as she doesn't want me to have an accident.)  This time she would not let me go unless I agreed to stop throwing my blankets out of my crib.  Reluctantly I agreed.  After I went potty I still did not want to go to sleep but I had already agreed not to throw my blankets.  So I thought, what else can I do?  I decided to take off my pajamas and throw them.  Boy was Mom surprised to see my pajamas on the floor!  She doesn't know how tricky I can be (but she is learning)!

Fun and Interesting Facts About Carmel-by-the-Sea

I finally am letting my DaDa write a column too.  He loves Carmel-by-the-Sea so it seems appropriate that he writes about it.

------------------------------------------------------

Do you have a permit for those high heels, lady???

WHAT!!!??!?!

Yes...it is true. A permit is required "...for the wearing of shoes with heels in excess of certain limitations." Carmel-by-the-Sea has had some interesting laws on the books and this is one of them. Section 639.2 of the Municipal Code of Carmel-by-the-Sea states that a permit is required "...to wear shoes with heels which are in excess of two inches in height and less than one square inch of bearing surface upon the public streets and sidewalks of Carmel-by-the-Sea...." Permits are free and may be obtained from our quaint City Hall on Monte Verde just south of Ocean between 8:00 - 5:00.

But, why? You may ask. As stated on the back of the permit, "...much of the charm and appeal of the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea to residents and visitors alike is due to its urban forest character, featuring the maintenance of Monterey pine, oak and other native trees or shrubs throughout the city. The city has determined to maintain this character which benefits both the residents, by giving them quiet, semi-forested neighborhoods in which to live, and the business community, whose prosperity is so closely linked to the attractiveness of the city to visitors. The maintenance of an urban forest throughout the city necessarily involves some informality in the lighting, location and surfacing of streets and sidewalk areas, which in turn involves greater risk to those wearing high heeled shoes more adaptable to formal city life...." So there you have it.
