Since we have represented Tomiko Bailey, we have sold 67 of her pieces. Her work is in demand. Tomiko explains her love for plein air painting:
"Nature never reveals the exact same scene again: light, colors, shapes constantly shift with time. It is thrilling and rewarding to be painting outdoors, tiptoeing around the canvas to capture my impression of the landscape while realizing that I am part of it. Every scene exalts feelings and creates a state of mind. My intention is to paint a scene so open and unlimited by the frame that the viewer feels free to enter."

As a child in Japan Tomiko loved collage, drawing, watercolor and she received top awards in three city art competitions. She taught herself for many years hoping to find a great art teacher some day. She painted still-life scenes and landscapes with acrylics. She slowly gravitated to classes in drawing, watercolor and oil painting. She met excellent teachers and was encouraged to join the California Academy of Painters where she learned "plein air" or "open air" painting. She favors the "alla prima" technique of completing a painting in a single session with thick coats of oil paints, a method used

by many impressionists. She loves painting outdoors. It's exciting for her to capture fresh impressions and to depict as much as possible in a few hours on location. California offers numerous beautiful places to paint with intense light from the sky accentuating the earth tones. Plein air painting allows her to work with concentration and spontaneity. She also works comfortably in the studio to compose larger paintings, which are mostly expansions of the smaller field studies.

Sale Of The Month
This is where we feature a particularly exciting sale.
"The Godfather" by David O'Keefe
| | The Godfather Tribute by David O'Keefe |
A lovely couple from Florida came in to the gallery. They had decided not to spend any money on this trip. They had agreed. The husband is a renowned criminologist and has painstakingly created a Don Corleone bathroom. To say he is a Godfather aficionado is putting it mildly. Obviously once he saw O'Keefe's Godfather tribute he knew he had to have it. How to explain to your wife after you have said no expenditures on this trip that you now want to spend two grand? Not the simplest of tasks for most but fortunately his wife was very understanding and realized that this was something he had to have as well. This was the very last one. They have graciously invited us to visit the Corleone bathroom the next time we are in Florida so watch for updates!

(This is the best part)
Yes, it's true May was our best month ever. Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with the economy improving or even Mom and Dad (after all I've seen Dad fall asleep in his chair and Mom, well, she doesn't even come in until the afternoon). No clearly, the word has gotten out that I am here. People come here to see me! Not one person has ever rubbed Dad's belly - not one. Yes, it is now known internationally that I am here. I am the most famous dog in Carmel-by-the-Sea afterall. It just happens that after they are here to see me, they find something they like.

Remember your Dad on Father's Day! I finally got my Mom and Dad to take a day off. We had a family day, Mom, Dad, Shelby (my nanny), Mr. Bo Jangles and me. My favorite part of the whole day was when we went to Pfeiffer Beach and saw the hole in the rock. I absolutely loved it when the waves came rushing through. I kept saying "again" and then more waves would rush through. Mom said I had been there once before but that was when I was just a baby. Here's what it looks like:

| | Leisurely Swim $100- |
Craig Dietrich's beautiful above and below water photographs sparkle on his metallic photo paper. This adorable otter is in a black contemporary frame and is $100-.
Dietrich served in the Navy as a photographer. Craig explains, "I had the opportunity to hang from helicopters to take aerial photographs of my battle group and to serve as personal photographer for such notables as General Norman Schwarzkopf and newsman Dan Rather when they were on board my aircraft carrier. After the Navy, I knew I wanted to continue in photography and began working as a portrait photographer. During this period I also learned to scuba dive and it was as if a whole other world was opened up to me. I loved the peace and tranquility the underwater world afforded me and wanted to share the experience with others so much I became a scuba instructor. For those not quite brave enough to dive, I am able to share that world through my underwater photography."
