Chocolate Fun

  • In Japan, there is a Valentine's Day tradition called "Giri Choco" (or "obligation chocolate") which requires that women give inexpensive chocolate to all of the men in their lives: coworkers, bosses, etc.
  • Were you scared by the shower scene in the movie Psycho? The "blood" that you see in that scene is actually chocolate syrup. See--nothing to be afraid of!
  • Chocolate's scientific name, Theobroma cacao, was created by combining a Greek term meaning "food of the gods" (theobroma) and the ancient Olmec word for the chocolate plant, "cacao."
  • Stearic acid, a fat found in chocolate, does not raise LDL cholesterol levels, even thought it is a saturated fat.

Air Pressure & Turbine Life

One of the most frequent causes of premature bearing (turbine) failure is excessive air pressure going into the handpiece. An accurate reading for the handpiece air pressure can only be obtained using an in-line air gauge, which measures directly at each handpiece connection. The dial gauge on the front of the dental unit is little more than a relative indicator, and does not account for frictional air loss through the tubing.

Most handpieces run at manufacturer specs of 32-35psi. The Midwest Stylus runs best at 42psi....per the manufacturer.

Heartland Handpiece Express would be happy to come test your air pressure anytime!

Electric 1:5 Handpieces in need of REPAIR...

..... can heat up so quickly....

blue man magnifying glass

Here's a SAFETY TIP:

After removing the handpiece from the autoclave bag, but before gloving, install a bur in the chuck and run the attachment without the water spray for approximately 15 seconds. After the bur stops turning, gently grasp the head of the attachment with an ungloved thumb and forefinger to feel for any heat. A properly functioning electric 1:5 speed increasing attachment may feel warm to the touch after this - but it should NOT feel HOT. If you have any doubts, repeat this procedure for a longer period of time to see if the head does get progressivley hotter? If you still have any doubt about the amount of heat  generated from the head - send the unit to Heartland Handpiece  for evaluation.

memorial day

A Memorial Day Tribute

by. C. W. Johnson

We walked among the crosses

Where our fallen soldiers lay.

And listened to the bugle

As TAPS began to play.

The Chaplin led a prayer

We stood with heads bowed low.

And I thought of fallen comrades

I had known so long ago.

They came from every city

Across this fertile land.

That we might live in freedom.

They lie here 'neath the sand.

I felt a little guilty

My sacrifice was small.

I only lost a little time

But these men lost their all.

Now the services are over

For this Memorial Day.

To the names upon these crosses

I just want to say,

Thanks for what you've given

No one could ask for more.

May you rest with God in heaven

From now through evermore.

Thank you for reading the latest edition of "The HANDPIECE Times". We look forward to helping you with your handpiece repair needs.

Sincerely,
