Dear Friend of HCA, Background is unsung. It is never in the limelight and rarely appreciated for the critical roll it plays in the success of an endeavor. Edmond Hillary shot to fame when he climbed Mount Everest. He was knighted for his accomplishment. Do you ever hear about the team that enabled him to do it? They remain background, unsung, but critical to his success. In art and the exhibiting of art the importance of background should not be underestimated. An important element to the success of the HCA gallery at the Kenilworth Lodge is the | Volunteers at Work | specially designed and built moveable background walls that highlight and give dignity to the art displayed on them. This flexible construct of six 7' 3" double sided, 4 to 6' wide, carpeted panels weighing 200+ pounds each created a number of challenges to the HCA volunteers that built and moved them from ground level into the gallery. Thanks to the persistence, ingenuity and hard work of artists Jim Fitch, Bob Fishal and Ken Merop HCA now has a moveable gallery with a touch of class. This versatility enables the art exhibit to be rolled into the lobby of the Kenilworth and still be seen when there is an event scheduled in the Cabaret Room. The art is the hero and for that I give special thanks to the HCA volunteers that made it happen. | Fred Leavitt | In earnest, Fred Leavitt, President Heartland Cultural Alliance www.heartlandculturalalliance.org |

Inaugural Arts and Music Event at the new HCA Gallery in the Kenilworth Lodge By John Lasco, Photos by Mountain Top | | Images from the Kenilworth Opening | On Saturday February 5, the Heartland Cultural Alliance hosted the opening of the newest gallery in Highlands County, at the historic Kenilworth Lodge, with an Arts and Music Festival. Reverend George Miller from Immanuel United Church of Christ performed the opening invocation. This was a free event, with classical guitar music by Kenny Summers, and original art work from 40 local artists. Wine and light snacks were available during the reception from 5 to 8 pm. The Golden Era Big Band then went into 'full swing' after 8pm, when dancing commenced. After 8pm there was a $5.00 cover. HCA hosted over 150 visitors in this very successful event, with four pieces of artwork sold and one pending. This arts and music event will take place on the first Saturday of the month with a new exhibit of local art and band. Exhibits will remain on display for the entire month in the HCA Kenilworth Lodge Gallery to give everyone a chance to view the artwork. This new venue gives our members another great location to display their work, and the Kenilworth gets the benefit of beautiful art on their walls. Due to the number of artists and limited hanging space, each artist was allotted one painting to hang. Fred Leavitt and his crew constructed very attractive movable panels to hang many of the paintings when the ballroom is in use, these panels can be brought to the lobby to keep the paintings on view. There was a lot of positive feedback about the event; special notice was made about the moveable walls and the clean, professional look of the gallery. If a piece of artwork is sold, the artist is invited to replace it with another work during the monthly period. A high profile venue in the Kenilworth Lodge has an audience that changes every several days. This increases the exposure of art and the potential for sales.

Scribes' Night Out : Sharing the Art of our Local Wordsmiths By Chris Williams | The second and fourth Sundays of January premiered a new HCA event: Scribe's Night Out at Brewster's Coffee House. On January 9, Sunny Serafino (HCA member) read a short story ("The Heart of a Woman") and two poems ("It Was No More" and "Why Do I Write") as well as an excerpt from her newest novel, "Forgiven." Sunny came to Florida from Bethlehem, PA and began her writing career later in life. She has written novels as well as memoirs, and won three prestigious awards. Sunny is currently teaching a creative writing class at SFCC and will repeat her memoir writing workshop on February 25 at the Lake Placid Library. She also hosts critique groups and is a professional public speaker. 18 people attended the Scribe's event over the course of the two Sundays in January. The January 23 event featured Jan Merop, who read from her book Pause and Consider and Nature's Window which features husband Ken's photography. Ken and Jan have lived in Sebring for 23 years. Jan writes a weekly inspirational column in the NEWS-SUN which became the basis of her book. Her numerous articles for various national magazines have won her awards from the Amy Foundation and the Florida Press Association. Since Ken's retirement from the Postal Service, he and Jan have collaborated on a collection of greeting cards which led to the book Nature's Window. An open session during the break offered poetry readings from published poet Cynthia Schumacher and "meter & rhyme master" Marilyn Johnson. Ms. Schumacher will be the featured reader at the February 13 event. Scribe's Night Out is open to all local writers, whether HCA members or not. The public is invited to come enjoy a signature Brewster's coffee and listen to prose and literature from Highlands County authors. Featured reader applications will be available on the HCA website.
