Media industry expert recruited to communication faculty 
Matthew Weber, a researcher at Duke University's Center for Technology, Entertainment and Media, is joining SC&I this fall as an assistant professor of communication. Prior to doctoral studies at USC, Weber worked in management for the Tribune Corp. and Starcom Worldwide. He has examined why some
news organizations succeed in the transition to digital media and others fail. (read more)
Multi-year, million-dollar study on virtual reference led by SC&I professor
Librarians can transform virtual-reference encounters into relationship-building opportunities with library users. That conclusion is in a new, "ground-breaking" report by Marie Radford, associate professor of library and information science, and collaborators. The $1.1 million federally funded project was a six-year effort. (read more)
New director for Ph.D. program Marija Dalbello,
associate professor of LIS, is the new director of SC&I's interdisciplinary doctoral program. She was elected by an overwhelming majority of the faculty and last spring was chosen for the Outstanding Ph.D. Faculty Award by the program's 120 students. (read more)
Journlism grad honored as a mentor Law Students for Reproductive Justice recently honored Jill Morrison (LC '91),
a journalism grad, for 12 years of "supportive, innovative and inspiring guidance." She is senior counsel in health and reproductive rights at the National Women's Law Center.
SC&I researcher wins major federal grant Jacek Gwizdka, assistant profesor of LIS, this month won a $335,000 federal grant to further his study into the mental efforts expended by people engaged in online search. (read more)
