Greetings!

Fall Luncheon

The Fall Luncheon will be held Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at the Country Club of Little Rock.
We are so excited because Philip Mann, Music Director of ASO, will be there to speak about the 2011-2012 season. We also will hear from Martin Thoma, President of the ASO Board of Directors about the importance of the ASOG's financial support of the ASO and our educational programs. Our wonderful co-chairs of Symphony Designer House XXI, Jane Rosen, Peggy Jones and Kathy Searcy, will be recognized for their successful fund raising event for the ASO. Please join us as we kick off what I believe will be an exciting year for the ASOG.

As your President I am committed to communication, communication, communication!! I want everyone to know what is happening and how you can be involved. Your Board of Directors will meet the first Thursday of the month from 10:00-12:00 in Fitzgerald Hall, Room 104. When I look at the calendar for the year I am overwhelmed with all the many opportunities we offer to support music in our community and in our schools. I know our Guild Notes may not be fancy and we are working on the look - I just want to get you the information so you can sign up and be a part of an exciting and vigorous volunteer group in Little Rock.

Meetings for 2011-2012

In an effort to attract more people to our ASOG meetings, we have changed the meeting times. When you receive your Yearbook at the Fall Luncheon you will notice we have moved five of the General Membership meetings to 11:30 a.m. with the option of purchasing a box lunch, bringing your own lunch or not having lunch at all. Drinks will be provided for everyone. The other 2 meetings will be at 4:30 p.m. with wine and cheese. As usual all of our meetings will have a musical program and we promise lots of time to socialize and hear the latest news about ASOG.

Membership Task Force

At the second meeting of the Task Force, the members were elected to call and welcome the new members and to conduct a poll of the members who had not renewed their membership.

They also discussed having a table in the lobby of Robinson Center for recruiting new members for the ASOG as well as an announcement from the stage about the Guild.  The ASO staff will have to be consulted on these proposals.  They also want a link from the ASO web site to the ASOG web site.

Symphony Designer House Task Force

Camille Williams is chairing this task force that will look at the attendance, income and expenses for the last ten years of SDH. They will conduct a complete budget analysis as to income, expenses and profit for the past 10 years of SDH. Questions to be answered:

Why do SDH in 2013?

Is it to support designers?

To make a lot of money?

Because we have always done it?

Is it a destination event?

Is it a place for parties?

Is it a clubhouse for volunteers?

Should we hire a staff person to coordinate SDH?

If we have SDH, what is the length?

The Task Force is also charged to establish governance, goals and budgets for future SDH if the decision is made to continue with this project. People serving with Camille are Brigita Gardner, Sherry Shinn, Shari Edwards. The first meeting is Aug. 23, 2011 with a report to the Board on Sept. 1.

The ASO Guild works with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra to offer to all public and private schools our Orchestra and You program for K-3rd graders. This year we reached over 3,000 students in 40 schools and introduced them to the families of instruments that make up an orchestra. The students also got to experience a performance by one of the ASO players who spoke about his/her musical background and answered questions from the students.

Guild volunteers provide the narration of this program as well as showing our participants how their orchestra instrument is played.

Note from Karen Silvoso on Senior Net Computer Classes

Betty kindly permitted me to include this blurb in the August Guild Notes on a one time basis. I volunteer with a non profit organization called SeniorNet at UAMS. SeniorNet's mission is to provide people over 50 education for and access to computer technologies.
