Greetings!

Now it really feels like summer!  What are your plans for this summer?  Beach, mountains, camping, hiking, swimming, lounging, and gardening?  These are the activities we enjoy in the summer months.  Increased outdoor activities also mean that we need to protect our skin from too much sun.  A natural sunscreen that we recommend at Balanced Beauty is Daytime Defense SPF30 by Rhonda Allison Clinical Enterprises.  Using zinc oxide, it "provides a natural sun barrier, this pure and clean formulation protects the skin while providing antimicrobial, antioxidant, and soothing, healing support."  You can get this great product at 15% off with free shipping from our affiliate, Alana.  Just follow her link and use the coupon code CJJULY11.

Come, make time for yourself and enjoy a truly relaxing experience.  Call 818-991-1550.  By appointment only.

See coupon below for this month's specials.

Holistic Perspectives on Health, Beauty, and Wellness:
Wrinkles & Bone Loss

A recent Yale study has suggested that the quality of a

and wrinkle patterns (forehead and neck) in early post-menopause, may correspond to loss of bone density seen in osteopenia and osteoporosis, placing her at greater risk of fractures later in life.  The relationship between wrinkles and bone loss has been a topic of study for many years and is linked to the loss of collagen, a component of the connective tissue matrix that gives our body tissues, organs, and structures its shape and form.  Because women have less collagen then men and may lose up to 1% of collagen in their skin each year, it is vital that we be proactive in maintaining our bone health

The good news is that since our body is in a constant state of renewal, we can remodel our bones to restore its mineral density.  Katy Bowman states that "the failure for bone to generate at its correct rate is really a mechanical one . . . While proper nutrition is absolutely a requirement for healthy bone, the signal for bone to grow is mechanical in nature. The "GROW BONE" signal starts with a cell being *squished* within the bone. Without that *squish* of these mechanoreceptors (sensors sensitive to physical deformation) the nutrients that support bone growth can't do their job . Your body cannot use them without the signal."  The system of facial rejuvenation used at Balanced Beauty (Acugems Facial Rejuve) uses frequency signals (microcurrent, light, and tourmaline) to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the connective matrix of the skin.  Microcurrent has been used medically to heal non-union bone fractures.  (See our introductory Acugems coupon special below).

Diet is also a key factor in bone health because some foods are just plain bone-leaching due to their acidic nature.  The theory is that acidic foods cause the body to release calcium from the bones in an attempt to bring the body into a more alkaline state.  The leaching of stored calcium has been implicated in bone loss.  Vivian Goldschmidt, founder of Save Our Bones, implicates milk and milk products as common bone thieves due to their acidic nature.  She also discusses the risk factors associated with the common medical prescriptions given for bone loss.  One of her recommendations is to limit acidic foods while increasing alkalinizing foods.  She does NOT view osteoporosis as a disease, only an imbalance which can be corrected. She writes, "You can expect to increase your bone density and reverse osteoporosis from the moment you get started."  I agree with her statement.  I've had a struggle with bone loss for years, both losing and gaining bone.  Although the dynamics associated with bone loss are complex, we can change our health status, starting where we are today.

Summer is a great time to improve bone health through increased activity and the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables, no matter what your age.  Think about "banking" bone health.  Here is a partial list of alkalinizing foods to increase in your diet: almonds, apples, apricots, avocado, bananas, blackberries, Brazil nuts, cantaloupe, cherries, coconut, grapes, papaya, mangoes, pineapple, olives, dates, citrus fruits, peaches, pears, sprouted grains, honey, as well as ALL greens.  Acidifying foods to limit in your diet include meat, dairy, blueberries, corn, cranberries, breads, brown rice, wheat, oats, sodas, and sugar.

Since summertime is also assigned to the Fire element (Heart and Small Intestine Meridian and Organ Systems) in Traditional Chinese Medicine, now is a good time to nourish the Water element-the Kidney and Bladder Meridian and Organ Systems which are directly related to bone health.  The kidneys maintain the balance of water in the body as well as the acid-base balance (recall that too much acidity has been correlated to mineral bone density loss).  As blood passes through the kidneys each day, nitrogen compounds and other chemicals are extracted from the blood to be further filtered and eliminated through the skin and the kidneys/bladder systems.
