Holistic Perspectives on Health, Beauty, and Wellness:
Summer--A Time to 'Get Moving!'
The summer season allows us to express our energy and creativity and abounds
 | | Summertime... | with opportunities to get ourselves moving. The warmth of summertime also supports action, growth, and maturation in the natural world. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the summer season is associated with the Fire element. Fire represents the meridian and organ systems related to the Heart and Small Intestine. The Heart system moves the blood and relates figuratively to the qualities of insight and intuition while the Small Intestine system plays an important role in digestion and is linked to judgement which involves the literal separating out and transformation of nutrients needed to nourish and repair our body. Our complexion also holds clues to the state of the Fire element by its hue.
Energy, enthusiasm, joy, and vitality typify a healthy Fire system and an imbalance in this system manifests when an individual starts laughing or becoming hysterical at inappropriate times. Sadness can be the flip side of an imbalance. Bitter foods/herbs can help restore balance to the Heart and Small Intestine systems. Commonly available bitter foods like watercress, endive, and escarole can restore balance. Herbs include red clover, hawthorn berry, peppermint, and hibiscus flowers. Additionally, Elson M. Haas, author of "Staying Healthy with the Seasons," recommends the following foods to cleanse and tone the Small Intestine: equal parts of lentils, rice, and sunflower seeds cooked in water (about 45 minutes). Eat 1-2 cups daily over the course of two weeks. Herbs that support the Small Intestine include: fennel and anise seed as well as comfrey root.
Interestingly, Haas also stated that while summer is associated with the yang energies (the motive forces in Chinese Medicine), June 21 also signals the beginning of the yin cycle which peaks on December 21. So, the choices we make in summer will influence our state of health and well-being in winter. Therefore, it's a good idea to eat light in summer to keep our body balanced and be sure to get plenty of exercise. Fresh organic fruits and vegetables will help us stay hydrated and nourished during this time of year. Go easy on dairy and meat as these foods are heavy, weighing us down and avoid processed foods whenever possible.
Common illnesses associated with an imbalance in the Fire system include high or low blood pressure, inflammation, anemia, atherosclerosis, poor circulation, and digestive issues.

| What You Need to Know About Skin Care for Men
Although they don't talk about it with their guy friends like women do with their

girl friends, the majority of men ARE interested in maintaining a groomed appearance. They want healthy looking skin-they just don't want to spend a lot of time on it! So, savvy skin care companies like Rhonda Allison Cosmeceuticals have formulated specific products and facials to address the unique skin care needs of men. At Balanced Beauty, we use Rhonda Allison's RAW line of products and facials for men which have been formulated from "organic raw minerals, plants, and cutting-edge bio-tech ingredients."Men's skin IS different than women's. For one thing, their dermis is thicker and more sensitive than a woman's and produces an acid mantle composed of oils, perspiration, and fats which act as a skin protectant. Their pH is also more acidic causing their skin cells to produce fewer antioxidants, leaving men more vulnerable to skin cancer. Daily shaving also irritates their skin, causing razor burn and can create ingrown hair issues. Testosterone influences sebum production at the level of the dermis and the epidermis to toughen hair follicles. Now we can begin to understand why men's skin care is a science! Ladies, help you man get into a good skin care routine and avoid skin cancer with 20% off our RAW MAN EXPRESS FACIAL and RAW skin care products (get 15% off products via Alana's link on our homepage). This gentle, corrective 30 minute treatment will leave his skin smooth, softened, hydrated, toned, and balanced in just one treatment.
