Failings of our Healthcare System There is quite a bit of division among citizens in the US about healthcare reform. Most of the population and nearly all of the physicians are worried. The problem is our healthcare system is broken and there is no easy fix. In fact, the current reform measures may make things worse. A recent study, by the nonprofit Commonwealth Fund, looked at five measures of healthcare in 7 developed countries; US, Britain, Australia, Germany, Canada, Netherlands, and New Zealand. The measures were; quality, efficacy, access to care, equity, and the ability to lead long, healthy, productive lives. The US ranked sixth out of seven. What is even more surprising is that the per person health spending in the US was $7,290, more than double that of any other country in the study. So we did rank first in one category....... |

CRAVINGS
Every client without exception presents with one or two food items or areas that they have a hard time eliminating from their diets. Most of us are not successful when we feel that we have to "give up" something we love. Instead of "giving up" let's look at ways that we can find acceptable healthy alternatives that will satisfy our cravings. The following are frequently heard statements: I CRAVE SALTY FOODS!
Replace chips with nuts salted with sea salt, when using sea salt for the first time make sure to start with a grinder and use sparingly, because sea salt has a more intense flavor and takes less. Grab a few pickles or olives or try banana peppers on your salad. I JUST HAVE TO HAVE SOMETHING CRUNCHY! Try crisp or crunchy foods such as nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables, all are crunchy and the crisp freshness can satisfy. WHERE IS MY CHOCOLATE!!!
Select chocolate that is at least 70% Cocoa, individually wrapped. This high percentage of cocoa provides great benefits for your heart and by having the chocolate individually wrapped you are less likely to consume large quantities. Another great idea is to mix chocolate protein powder with cottage cheese, it tastes just like cake batter!! Moderation is the take home message with chocolate. I JUST HAVE A SWEET TOOTH!Replace high sugar foods with berries, when frozen slightly they are sweeter tasting and the coldness helps with craving. Many use nuts, berries, and cottage cheese for their dessert. Try goat cheese, feta cheese, berries, or apples, with nuts. Place a few Dark chocolate pieces in with nuts and dried berries. MY COMFORT FOODS ARE GONE, WHAT DO I DO?
Implement some of the suggestions above and look at your comfort foods in a new light. I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT MY BREAD!!
Use forks and knives, forks and knives, forks and knives. Try wrapping meats and cheeses in lettuce or wrap meat in hard cheese slices. Use vegetables and fruits for dipping in place of crackers. Return to top |

MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS The Physiologix Weight Loss program is a medical weight loss program that Dr. Stickler has developed based on his experience of evaluating and treating over 10,000 overweight and obese clients. He has over 10 years of experience in medical weight loss and he knows what works. The diet is easy to follow and is not based on buying meal supplements but rather on eating meals and learning an overall healthy lifestyle. Appetite suppressants are used when indicated. Our program also offers something that few other programs do - a licensed registered dietitian. Many people are self proclaimed nutritionist or take a course to become a "certified nutrition counselor" but that is not the same as a 4 or 5 year degree in dietetics. If you are looking to get that fit healthy body then this is the program that will guide you to that goal. Program details · No Contracts · Monthly visits with the dietitian · Initial visit DEXA body composition scan ($125 value) · Lipotropic injections each week (Dr. Stickler's own formula) · Appetite suppressants (optional) · Follow-up DEXA scan for every three months in the program
Only $119 a month

FITNESS: FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREEN In most fitness programs, the body's ability to move through its most basic and fundamental movements goes un-assessed. It is common for significant limitations or right and left side imbalances to exist in some individuals at very basic levels of movement. Significant limitations in right-left imbalances drastically distort motor learning, movement perception, body awareness and mechanics. They rob the body of efficiency and are very often hidden by those who learn to compensate and substitute with other movement patterns. These limitations and imbalances should not be overlooked. The body should be free of restrictions and free of imbalances prior to training conditioning and fitness activities . It is highly recommended that all individuals beginning a functional fitness program be screened for asymmetries or imbalances in the body that may make them more prone to injuries.
The Functional Movement Screen is a new screening tool we are utilizing at Physiologix to demonstrate the quality of movement an athlete possesses to build all other athletic ability and skill. It includes seven tests that assess mobility and stability.
The results of the screen are used to individualize each workout program based on the person's "weak" link. The training system attempts to pinpoint these "weak" links in the movement pattern and alleviate them by assigning exercises to correct them.
Following is a list of benefits provided through the assessment and training to the identified weaknesses. Improves functional and athletic performance Helps to reduce the potential for training and sports injuries Identifies physical imbalances or weaknesses Rehabilitates imbalances and strengthens weaknesses with simple corrective excercises Allows trainers to better individualize training programs for greater results Allows trainers to teach the individual to identify the difference between movement quality and movement quantity Allows the trainer to identify current injury trends and stats as they relate to the prevention of non-contact injuries Allows the trainer to identify potential cause and effect relationships of micro-trauma as well as chronic injuries in relation to movement asymmetries To find out more about the FMS please contact the Physiologix staff. We ranked last on safety and very low on quality. We also did surprisingly poorly on access to primary care and after hours care. US patients were most likely to be prescribed the wrong drugs for their conditions and had to wait the longest to learn of abnormal lab results. Some have attributed these problems to our unhealthy lifestyles in the US but if you look at other countries in the study, this does not necessarily hold true. Several of the other countries have much higher smoking rates and even countries like Germany have a much older population. Enter concierge medicine. I recognized many of these existing problems several years ago and I saw more on the horizon. I have been very disenchanted with our current healthcare system and that is one of the reasons that I have essentially dropped out. In order to obtain and maintain optimal health and lead that long, healthy, productive life, it takes an aggressive, proactive approach. Concierge medicine has allowed me to do that without the government and insurance constraints and my clients are perfect examples of the benefits of this type of approach. Concierge care is not inexpensive but I can promise that the majority of my clients are paying significantly less than the $7290 a year on their healthcare and are great examples of health. With the new reforms will come an even worse situation. There will be 32 million newly insured patients entering the healthcare system over the next two years, many of which have major chronic health issues. Our primary care system is already heavily burdened and adding this into the mix is going to make the situation worse. How long do you currently have to wait to get in for a visit with your primary care, several months? How long do you sit in the office past your appointment time to get your 2-5 minutes of actual face time to review your health? Just think of a few numbers; the average primary care doctor carries a patient load of 3500 patients, now let's increase that by 400-500 patients so now we are dealing with 4000 patients for each primary care doctor. Let's assume that they work an aggressive 48 weeks a year at 5 days a week = 240 days, that leaves 17 patients a day to see them each once a year. Taking into account for paperwork, phone call returns, consultations, lab reviews, etc. This leaves at best about 5 hours of patient time a day. That gives each patient 17 minutes a year if everyone visits only once. Add to this the problem that all of these new patients have many chronic health conditions that will require multiple follow-ups to manage their chronic diseases. Now imagine a system where you can call your physician 24/7 on their cell phone or contact them by email, where you can call and stop in the office for a visit on the same day and be seen right at the time you were scheduled, imagine no time constraints on the visit, having each of you lab values reviewed in person or over the phone (rather than getting a call from office staff saying it was all ok). Imagine having someone managing your health as aggressively as your investment banker manages your money - welcome to concierge medicine. | Return to top |
