Special Holiday Waste and Recycling Tips

1.) Recycle your Christmas Tree for Free:  Each year, about 15,000 Christmas Trees are recycled in Thousand Oaks.  Your trash hauler makes it easy, just follow these three simple steps:

 *  Remove all decorations, tinsel, lights, and the tree's stand (wood or metal).

 *  Cut your tree into sections no longer than 4-feet long.  Do not bag your tree.

 *  On your collection day between December 26th and January 6th, place your tree in your yard trimmings cart.  No flocked trees allowed.

Trees picked up will be chipped and reused as mulch throughout the City.

2.) Two Times the Trash - For Free!  As a special holiday feature, you may put out twice the amount of trash at no extra charge during the two weeks after Dec. 25. Please make sure the trash is in bags alongside the trash bin. For recyclables, you may place these in bags next to your recycling container, but please make sure to flatten all boxes.

WM & KAB team up to support the 2012 Conejo Teen Video Festival

Waste Management, in partnership with Keep America Beautiful, has pledged a $5,000 grant to support the 2012 Conejo Teen Video Festival, and the addition of a special category this year for documentaries and/or public service announcements specific to diversion, recycling or liter abatement (with K-12 emphasis).

Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful team up each year to offer grants that support local programs that improve communities and their environments.

The Conejo Teen Video Festival is an annual event produced by the City of Thousand Oaks Youth Commission that gives aspiring film writers and directors in the Conejo Valley age 12 - 19 an opportunity to showcase their film making talents. Awards are given for top entries in a variety of film making categories. The top entry in the special Recycling Documentary/PSA category will receive a scholarship award not only for themselves, but also their school! Applications are now being accepted, for more information visit  www.conejoteenvideofestival.org

CompostMaterial Reuse Program - A Success!

Paint Bucket

In 2011, the City's Material Reuse Program diverted 15,724 pounds of hazardous waste, breaking last year's record amount by more than 3,000 pounds!  The successful program continues to grow in popularity, saving money and landfill space.

The program, which takes place in conjunction with the City's Household Hazardous Waste program, offers residents new or nearly new products received from the monthly event. Area residents can simply stop by the Material Reuse area and pick up free supplies including household cleaners, paint, automotive products, pool and spa products, and more.

The next Household Hazardous Waste Collection and Material Reuse event will take place January 14, 2011.  Appointments are required for participation in the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, but not for the free Material Reuse area.
