May 2011

Here it is May already.  I hope all your spring sewing projects are going well.

This is the last in the series of basic sewing tools needed to complete a project.

This newsletter is concentrating on marking your pattern.  I have to confess that this is my least favorite job in sewing.  But, it's a very important step for the construction of a garment.  These marks are guides when you have to match seams or know when to stop sewing a seam for a kick pleat, zipper, or other details in the design.

I hope this mini series has been helpful for you.

If you have any projects that you have created and would like to share them with your fellow readers, please send them to me and I will dedicate the newsletter to you.

The Importance of Marking Your Pattern Pieces When Sewing A Garment

After you have cut out your pattern pieces, the next step is to transfer certain markings onto the fabric. Some of these markings are:

  1. Dots - On many of the pattern pieces, there are dots that show you where to line up your seams, insert a sleeve, or stop a seam to allow for the zipper, etc.
  2. Darts - Mark the lines of the dart so you can match them accurately to have a perfect fit.
  3. Buttons & Buttonholes - Marking where the buttonholes and buttons go on a garment so that they are spaced evenly.
  4. Folds, Tucks or Pleats - Marking the fabric for folds, tucks, and pleats makes it easier to create them as you begin sewing your item.

In doing some research, I found this video that does a nice job in showing different ways to mark your fabric.  I hope it's helpful to you.
