Sienna final  People who have known me for a long time know that my life has been filled with color.  An artist's palette of oranges, umber, persimmons, and sienna were a mainstay of my childhood, impressing on me the art of creating "visual atmosphere" with color.
Speaking to these earlier times, a request came in from an old friend for me to highlight "Raw Sienna" as my color for this newsletter.  How appropriate! As the ubiquitous black summer camp bags get stashed away, the seaside vacation photos get emailed to relatives, dusk arrives a little sooner, and the scent of apple trees becomes more fragrant ---- the colors of our world transform.  They become deeper, richer, & earthier in nature, contrasting to our clear tones and shocking brights of summer.  Here is where Raw Sienna fits in.
Raw Sienna refers to the color that is a ferruginous earth used as a yellowish-brown pigment.  Analogous words could be caramel or caramel brown.  The soil can also be roasted in a furnace to achieve a reddish brown pigment and is then referred to as Burnt Sienna.  The origins of this pigment are from the mid-1700s in Siena, Italy, where it was first produced.
The use of Raw Sienna can create a warm depth of color and along with certain pairings would blend well to create a cozy environment for those cool weather months.  For interior design applications, this could be married with many complimentary colors for both permanent or seasonal furnishings and textiles.  Some excellent selections would be earthy mossy greens, pumpkin orange, charcoal gray, or aubergine.  My joy, as a designer, is to add some of this wonderful and rich color into you life.
