 MLK Day of Service

On January 16 United Methodist Ministries will host teams of youth and youth leaders at the annual MLK Day of Service. The day of service is dedicated to honoring the work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day "on" not "off." The teams will engage in activities that celebrate Dr. King's teachings and look at justice issues that exist in our present day.

Teams will meet at Tri-Community Church, 6001 Fontanelle Boulevard, Omaha, NE for check-in, orientation, and instructions. The day will include service work at local agencies in the metro-Omaha area and education on race and poverty in our communities. Transportation to sites will be provided. The day will begin at 9am and conclude at 3pm. The cost to participate is $15 per youth which includes lunch, transportation to and from work sites, and a commemorative t-shirt. Pre-registration is required by January 9th. Click here to register online.

Another MLK resource for local youth leaders:
  • On Sunday, January 15, 2012, ReThink Church invites youth and adults to participate in a community-by-community, nationwide conversation about our most pressing social issues. This is an opportunity for individuals to reach out to new persons and build community over a shared meal. Inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., America's Sunday Supper invites people from all backgrounds to come together to share a meal, discuss issues that affect their community and highlight the power each person has to make a difference! Sign Up Now for Spring and Summer Mission Opportunities!

Grace UMC, OlatheAs a part of United Methodist Ministries' educational mission and outreach, we regularly host mission teams and volunteers of all ages.  We are one of Nebraska's three accredited VIM sites.

We are looking to spring and summer 2012 as we spread the word about the potential for mission teams, confirmation groups and other mission-minded groups to come and serve with us for anywhere from a day to a week.

UMM offers mission experiences that are uniquely created for each team and allow participants to see and participate in a variety of different ministry and mission work throughout the Omaha area.

We arrange housing for overnight trips, as well as schedule work projects in conjunction with community organizations and non-profits, including our own community gardening project the Big Garden.

Most of our groups are middle school and high school-aged teams, but we also offer mission experiences for adult teams, multi-generational family teams, as well as one focused on learning about food security. New variations on our traditional mission experiences are also being developed for the coming summer.

Interested teams can contact Volunteer Coordinator Lisa Maupin lmaupin@bigmuddyumc.org or go to our website for more information.

Resource Library Available

Did you know that United Methodist Ministries has a resource library?  Our book collection includes titles on food, gardening, & permaculture; children's crafts, church issues, and many social justice topics.  We feel that these resources are under-utilized, and would like to make them available to you.  You can now peruse the entire UMM library online 24-hours a day, or you can stop by our office at 2665 Farnam Street between the hours of 9 and 3 to check them out.  These titles are all available for you to borrow, and we hope you'll take advantage of this great collection!
