UTO

United Thank Offering

May 14-15th, 2011

The United Thank (UTO) offering is a personal and family devotional program of the Episcopal church. It is a sum of our daily thanks for the blessings in our every day lives. Founded by two women in 1859, it has become a worldwide effort to meet the compelling human needs of men, women, and children throughout the world. Offerings are used for schools, community centers, churches, clinics and shelters for the homeless.

On May 14th & 15th, there will be a special envelope provided for contributions to the United Thank Offering. Please make checks payable to All Saints' Church and designate in the memo section "United Thank Offering" or just UTO. We will continue to keep the collection open until the end of May. Thank you from the Episcopal Church Women.

Men and Women (children, too!)

Corporate Communion

Our Saturday Breakfast club is being displaced by our annual corporate communion and breakfast buffet. When? Saturday May 7th. The Holy Eucharist begins at 9 am and breakfast follows. The Rev. Robert Betts, our Saturday celebrant, will preside at the Eucharist. Joining him will be Jane Peters Estes presenting her historical program, "The Battle of Gettysburg: Where Were The Women?" Adult tickets $5. Tickets for children under 12 are $3. Yes, you can purchase at the door, but please get your tickets in church on Sunday May 1st. It gives us a better RSVP count for Chef George's breakfast! Thanks.

 Search Committee Update

A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step - Confucius

We have taken many steps toward our search for a new Rector and yet our journey ahead is great. It is with these careful steps that our Search Committee works quietly in preparation for completion of our parish profile. This profile is one of the last pieces of establishing All Saints' identity for prospective Rectors. Both the parish profile and detail survey results are anticipated to be completed within the next few weeks.

As each step brings us closer on our journey we ask for your continued prayers.

"Assist us, Lord, in living hopefully into the future.

In the face of change, help us to set unnecessary fears aside and to recognize our potential for creative response. Help us to develop a reasonable optimism when confronted by "the new" and to guard against our own defensiveness.

Be with us as we remember and celebrate former times, and keep us from unreasonable yearning for them, which takes us from the work you have set before us in our time. All this we ask in the name of your Child, Jesus Christ." Amen.

Layette Sunday Results

Thank you for the generosity of each of you who expressed love and concern for the well being of infants and young children through our Layette Sunday efforts. Through your gracious donations, we were able to send a check of $632.00 to Episcopal Relief & Development. We received 9 outfits, 2 dresses, 2 jackets, 5 dungarees, 4 tops, 12 onesie's, 12 t-shirts, 2 bibs, a pair of shoes and a crib skirt. Carol Heyer and The Knitters donated many hand knitted blankets, sweaters, scarves, and hats. Pat Ryan crocheted 5 hat, glove, and scarf sets and as always, Peg Schoen's friend Nancy Pilch knitted over 50 slippers in all sizes.

These items were given to St. Barnabas Mission in West Philadelphia, a shelter for women and children that is a mission of Episcopal Women's Services. Thank you for your continuing support of this vital ministry. - Joan Kelly

Young at Heart

Our next Young at Heart meeting is Thursday, May 5th. Lunch begins at 12:00 pm. Chef George, as always, will put on the fare! One of our favorite entertainers, Kirk Maureer, will join us for music and singing. Our next luncheon will be Thursday May 19th. Hope you can make both!

 Ship at Sea

Seafarers Are Rarely Home for Holidays

Have you thought about what it would be like to be set out to sea while your family was home celebrating the holiday season?  For many seafarers, this is very much a reality. All Saints', partnering with the Seamen's Church Institute, helps show our appreciation for these men and women who make such an impact on our every day lives.

How can you help? We are always looking for items to donate to ditty bags, a bag typically filled with items needed for every day life. I can't imagine not being able to run out to the store for something as simple as tooth paste! Items on the ditty bag wish list:

        • Knitted Hats & Scarves (dark colors)
        • Razors
        • Cans of Shaving Cream (7-11 oz. cans)
        • Toothbrushes & Toothpaste (4-6 oz tubes)
        • Combs
        • Heavy Socks & Work Gloves
        • Deodorant Sticks
        • Mini Sewing Kits
        • Pens & Writing Tablets
        • Nail Clippers
        • Financial Contributions

If you're anything like me, picking up one or two of these items on a weekly shopping trip would be practically an after thought! Donations for ditty bags can be dropped off at church. As always, your contribution is appreciated!

medicine cabinet

Does your medicine cabinet look like this?

If your medicine cabinet looks like this, then I think we must go to the same doctor! How many of those medicines do you still use? How many are outdated? It is an alarming fact that over 16 million 12 and over children (yes, children) took a prescription medicine found at home for enjoyment alone. Let's not add any more to that number.

Now is the time to get rid of those prescriptions safely! Torresdale Boys Club and the Deputy Sheriffs' Association are hosting a medication disposal day this Saturday, April 30th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come turn in your unused or expired medication (labels removed please) easily by driving up to our pick up point. No questions asked, and the staff will do all the rest! Torresdale Boys Club is located at 4500 Linden Avenue, between Frankford and Torresdale Avenues. Thanks to Jim Lee for his assistance in making this happen!

Baptism 1

Celebration of Holy Baptism

Please join us on Sunday May 15th at 10:00 a.m. when we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Baptism for Teagan James Thomas. Teagan is the son of Ashley and Tracey Parsons-Thomas. Welcome, Teagan, to your new life in Christ! And on Sunday June 5th at 10:00 a.m. we will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Baptism for Wyatt Redmond Mitchell, son of Robert and Saralee Mitchell. Please welcome Wyatt, too, to his new life in Christ!

All Saints' Chapel New Stained Glass

These beautiful new stained glass windows have been placed in All Saints' Chapel much to the admiration of all who venture into the lower level of our church. The windows are depictions of Ruth and Naomi. Both were commissioned and provided by Donna Carrick. Donna has given the windows to All Saints' to the Glory of God and in loving memory of her mother, Ruth I. Noblet. The windows were installed by Lamb Studios of Wyckoff, NJ. Thank you, Donna, for the beauty that will continue to shine light in our chapel for ages to come.

Parish News

Have you ever wondered how we reach that nifty little synopsis of where All Saints' contributions are for the year? Magic you say? Elves you say? Close! We have our very own All Saints' Angels...and angels I call them, to have patience to sit and count the offering every week without fail! Join me in sending a big thank you to Doris Horrell, George Hall, Bill Hilt, Doris DeRitis, and Bob and Ann Drager for their help every week.

The cold. The snow. Oh, the snow! That's what faced some of the brave souls that ventured out for our Uno's Fundraiser on February (insert date here). A big thank you from Colleen Ryan to all that enjoyed a warm lunch or dinner (or even both!). The Bazaar Committee thanks you from the bottom of their tummy - oops I mean hearts - for the $136 raised for the 2011 Bazaar. Stay tuned and keep your eyes peeled for the vouchers as we look to do it again this summer!

Congratulations go out to SFC John J. Rush Jr. who is presently stationed at Ft. Rucker, Alabama and is being promoted in May to Lieutenant in the U. S. Army. He will be stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. John is the nephew and godson of Rosalie Rush. He has been in the army for 14 years and is making a career of it. Best of luck from his parents John J. & Mary Frances Rush, sister Maryellen Rush, and Rosalie!

Nora Perry, All Saints' Treasurer, recently attended a finance seminar at St. Timothy's in Roxborough. Nora joined representatives from 45 other parishes. Roles and Expectations of the Vestry, Pledges, Assessments and Budgeting were all interesting and informative topics covered by four presenters. Thank you Nora, for keeping us 'in the know'!

Do you smell that? It's....it's....that's it! It's the smell of fresh pretzels at coffee hour. Thanks to Tom Shand for bringing them each Sunday, still warm from the oven. We are thankful!

Dick & Flo Bradley have a new home! The Bradleys have moved to:

Bob Buckley has finished his course of radiation treatment and is working on regaining his energy. Anybody who has been through this knows it takes time. In the mean time, Dot Buckley is being examined for significant back pain. Your prayers, please, all around.

Jim Griffin was hospitalized for emergency surgery and is now recuperating at Anne's Choice before returning home. We're hoping for a speedy recovery.

And, this elevator story: Your interim Rector badgered our contractors for a ride on the elevator before its completion (It's still a work in progress). Steve got on the elevator, pushed the 'Up' button ... and the car went down. So he pushed the 'Down' button ... and the car went up. The glitch reminded Cary Rush of a time when he was first dating Dodie. Cary had a '53 Pontiac and was driving her to dinner. Dodie's father was right behind them in his car. You know, don't you, Cary's car - just like our elevator - had a short in its wiring. Every time Cary signaled a right turn the left blinker would come on. When he signaled to turn left it was the right blinker that flashed. Picture that. Can you also picture Dodie's dad immediately behind them? The cars are parked, dad gets out, takes Dodie aside and whispers, "You sure this guy's OK?" That was just about 54 years ago. Dodie and Cary have been together ever since. And Dodie has her own car.

Interim Rector's need continuing education. It's not only a good thing but required, too. Steve has enrolled in an 8-week course on the history of Palestinian - Jewish relationships. The course meets on Wednesday evenings at St. Asaph's in Bala Cynwyd. Steve will also be away May 22 - May 25 attending the Human Rights Campaign "Clergy Call" conference in Washington D.C. He will leave for DC after the 10:00 Eucharist on the 22nd.
