People at Work
January 2010
Greetings!

Welcome to our newsletter!  We're starting off the New Year with the publication of "People at Work", with news and practical tips about how to improve productivity and quality of life in the workplace.  If that sounds like something on your list of New Year's resolutions, read on...
Starting off on the right foot
Assess your readiness for 2010

By Dr. Lucy Lpez-Roig
2010 calendar
With the celebration of the New Year comes a heightened awareness of time.  We look back at the year that has passed and try to envision the one ahead.  For many people, it is time to "close the books" on the old year, not just in the financial sense, but by dealing with unfinished business, both personal and professional.  We would like to begin the New Year with a clean slate.  It is also a time to look forward, set goals, envisage dreams, and make plans.  We are psychologically gearing up to face the challenges the new year will bring.

How can you prepare for the uncertainties of the year ahead? Try this review of your personal strengths, weaknesses, objectives, and circumstances in five important areas:

1. Your Self
What will be your personal challenges during the year ahead?
In what ways would you like to grow or improve yourself? For example, is there something about your behavior, work style, habits, or relationships that you would like to modify?
Are you seeking answers to deeper spiritual or emotional concerns?
Do you feel you could benefit from professional guidance and support in this process?

2. Your Health
What specific actions can you take to stay healthy and fit?
How can you give exercise, nutrition, and stress management the importance they deserve in your daily routine?
What are you doing to optimize your emotional health?
Have you been postponing a medical test or a visit to your physician? Why not set up an appointment right now?
Can you seek alternatives to improve your health insurance benefits (e.g., prescription medications, dental coverage, etc.)?

3. Your Work
Are you ready to shift gears on short notice at your job, if necessary?
If you are in a leadership position, are you prepared to make difficult decisions and manage the consequences?
Are you building a strong team to work with you when inevitable challenges arise?
Do you have a plan to increase your knowledge and skills in 2010?

4. Your Family

During the new year, what changes can you make to achieve a better balance between your job and your family life?
What steps can you take now to improve communication in your family?
If you are a parent, how can you spend more time with your children?

5. Your Finances
Do you have funds set aside for unexpected expenses and emergencies? How can you begin to save (e.g., a cooperative savings plan, savings club, etc.)?
What could you do this year to control or reduce your expenses (e.g. electric energy, gasoline, etc.)?
How would you cope with an extended period of illness or disability?
Do you know where you can get sound financial advice if circumstances pose unexpected dilemmas?

No matter how proactive you are, it's impossible to anticipate all the challenges that will appear during 2010.  But by taking stock of where you are in these five life areas, you will be better prepared to mobilize your resources to face them successfully.  Time is of paramount importance; so don't postpone preparation until the problem is on the horizon!  Being aware of time means living in the present moment. You can begin today!
Book of the Month:

It's Not the End of the World:
Developing Resilience in Times of Change

by Joan Z. Borysenko
(Carlsbad, California:  Hay House, 2009)

It's easy to feel overwhelmed by a sense of pessimism and powerlessness in the face of so many big problems affecting our everyday lives.

How well do you cope with the stress generated by uncertainty and rapid change?  Do you respond with denial, convincing yourself that somehow everything will be fine and all you need to do is sit back and wait? Or do you dwell on catastrophic thoughts, making you feel paralyzed and hopeless?  Dr. Joan Borysenko offers a much better option in her book, It's not the End of the World.

Dr. Borysenko is a world-renowned expert in stress management and mind-body medicine.  I have had the privilege of knowing her for many years and recently heard her speak on some of the topics included in this book. Her message is hopeful, sound, and practical. It is also very timely as we face the enormous challenges and opportunities of change.

Don't miss this excellent guide to developing the resilience we all need to thrive in the face of tough circumstances!
