Dr. Ryan is well versed in hospital administration, as well as clinical practice. She has served a dual role as Cottage Hospital's Chief Nursing & Operating Officer for the past three years.  Reg Lavoie, current CEO comments, "Her commitment to care is an asset for the hospital and our community."

She spent many years of her career as a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, practicing in many facets of healthcare, specializing in Emergency Medicine.  She has also held roles such as interim CEO, CNO, COO from one of the largest healthcare organizations in the country.  Steve Elliott, Cottage Hospital Board Chair notes, "that her diverse background and understanding of medicine and business makes her the ideal candidate for our hospital."

When the announcement was made to the staff of Cottage Hospital - the employees were elated by the news, citing her ability to get the job done, and the open communication she has with the staff. One employee stated "Maria is a true team player - she is always willing to help and her smile is contagious!"

Dr. Ryan looks forward to continuing the wonderful work that her predecessor, Reg Lavoie, has done over his seventeen year tenure at the hospital, while creating new opportunities for our hospital and our community.

Dr. Ryan is a New Hampshire native, she and her husband Robert reside in Lisbon, NH. They have three grown children who live in the Manchester area.

Please feel free to stop by and say hello to her the next time you visit Cottage Hospital, and look for more news about an open house early in the spring for an opportunity to bring your questions, comments and concerns to Dr. Ryan and her team.

Bone Density - What a Dexa Scan can do for you!

A bone densitometer is a fast, convenient and precise way to measure bone density to help determine your risk of developing osteoporosis and future fractures.  Based on a technology called Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry-or DXA-the bone densitometer measures the bone mineral content and density of specific bone sites.  The most common examination sites are the fracture-prone hip and spine.  These areas are most susceptible to fracture due to osteoporosis and other degenerative bone diseases.

"Osteoporosis affects 44 million Americans and 55% of Americans over age 55 are at risk for low bone mass," according to Radiology Director Marcy Rushford, ARDMS, RT.  Rushford also reported, "There have been more diagnoses this year than breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer combined." The high prevalence of these diseases makes bone densitometry a necessary part of a complete bone health program.
