Health Care News

pills and medication

Be sure to talk with your health care provider before stopping (or starting) any over-the-counter medication.

Medications older adults should use with caution

In a recent article from AARP.com, they indicated a list of medications that the American Geriatrics Society Foundation for Health in Aging recommends people over the age of 65 should be cautious about using.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs: used to reduce pain and inflammation. But in older adults, there is an increased risk of indigestion, ulcers and increased blood pressure.

Anti-anxiety and anti-insomnia drugs: in older adults, these medications can increase your risk of falls, as well as cause confusion. There is potential for feeling groggy and sleepy for an extended period of time.

Muscle relaxants: in addition to feelings of grogginess and confusion, these can also cause constipation, dry mouth and urination problems.

To see the complete article, including the all of the specific types of medication and their potential problems, visit the AARP web site.

Change of season

Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter, and dazzles us with brilliant colors of changing leaves. Although the summer is behind us, Poet's Seat Health Care Center is also transitioning into an exciting fall season. We have a fashion show planned for our residents later this month, as well as a pumpkin carving contest for Halloween. We're also compiling recipes for an upcoming cookbook for the holidays; so be sure to get us your favorite family recipes. And, at the end of the month, our residents will enjoy our annual Halloween Bash. So although the summer may be over, we're just heating-up!

Residents' art work on display

art masks

Decorative masks painted by our residents are just some of the many pieces on display at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

For the next several weeks, Baystate Franklin Medical Center will be displaying art work created by Poet's Seat Health Care Center residents. The display is part of their continuing support of local artists throughout the community.

Research has indicated that art has a positive effect on emotions and can reduce aggression, agitation, apathy and anxiety. Creating these pieces help residents improve their hand-eye coordination, as well as stimulate neuron activity in the brain (which is especially important in patients suffering from early Alzheimer's).

Our residents are excited to have their work on display for everyone to enjoy. They have worked on their pieces throughout the year as part of their art therapy or leisure programs, using such mediums as watercolor paint and mixed-media.

Parade Float 2011

Director of Nursing, Megan Wheeler, helps prepare the float prior to the Franklin County Fair Parade.

Poet's Seat Health Care Center took home first place for our float at this year's parade at the Franklin County Fair, held on September 8. The theme was "Going Green." The float consisted of various items and methods you can implement around your home to be more environmentally-friendly, including utilizing a turbine for wind energy, growing your own organic fruits and vegetables and drying your clothes on a clothesline. The float was constructed by staff members in the days leading-up to the parade. Many staff and family members rode on the float the day of the parade.

Calling all chefs

Poet's Seat Health Care Center is putting together a cookbook
of recipes submitted by staff, residents and residents' family members. We're planning to have it available for the holidays,
to benefit the residents' activity fund. We already have some great recipes collected, but we can still use some more.
To submit a recipe, simply e-mail it to inquiries@pshcc.com,
or mail it to us at:
