On July 16, Poet's Seat Health Care Center held its annual tag sale on a beautiful summer morning. We would like to thank all of the families, staff and community for their donations and support, in helping make this another successful event. Six Foods You Should
Be Eating

In a recent article appearing on AARP.org entitled "Eat to Stay Young," the editors of Cookstr.com reviewed the six essential foods you should be eating that can boost your health and slow down your biological clock. With all of their nutritional benefits, adding more of them to your diet is sure to put a spring in your step.

Fish: filled with Omega-3 fatty acids, certain types of fish have been found to improve mood and mental capabilities. Fish oil is also great for skin, preventing dryness & eczema, as well as promoting firmness and elasticity.

Cruciferous vegetable: including broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips and Brussels sprouts. These vegetables have a high concentration of antioxidants and sulfur, which provide energy and keep your skin healthy. They are also an effective aid to the body in fighting toxins and cancer.

The Dog Days of Summer

After a long, cold winter and a wet, rainy spring, the summer has finally arrived in full force. As the temperatures continue to approach triple digits, we remind everyone to avoid prolonged exposure to the extreme heat, and be sure to drink plenty of water. Here at Poet's Seat Health Care Center, we are keeping things cool with plenty of fun activities for our residents. This month we will be hosting musical entertainers while enjoying banana splits and root beer floats. On Aug. 10, we will be holding our annual family picnic for all of our residents and their families, and at the end of the month, we will be throwing a Hawaiian Luau birthday party. So, enjoy the Dog Days of Summer before the nights start getting longer and the leaves start to fall.

New Director of Rehabilitation named

Tammy

Tammy Provencal

Tammy Provencal has been named the new Director of Rehabilitation at Poet's Seat Health Care Center, where she has worked as a physical therapist for the past two years. She assumed her new role on June 1, after the previous director stepped-down.

Tammy earned her Master's degree in Physical Therapy from American International College in Springfield and her Bachelor's degree in Science from the same institution. She has over seven years of work experience in home health care and at long-term skilled nursing facilities prior to joining Poet's Seat.

Tammy's approach to physical therapy is all about making a connection with the patient. "Our therapists go above-and-beyond the physical aspects of therapy," says Provencal. "We make sure that we get to know each patient and earn their trust. That is so important!"

What drew Tammy to physical therapy is the rewarding experience of helping someone overcome physical limitations. "The challenge is looking at a person with multiple issues and determining how to bring them to their highest level of independence," says Provencal. This sometimes requires developing a new creative approach to therapy, which may be a different routine or exercise than a patient is accustomed to. "But, because we've already established a relationship," points out Provencal, "the patient is willing to trust us with our new approach."

Poet's Seat Health Care Center is excited to have Tammy aboard as the new Director of Rehabilitation. We are confident that her experience, enthusiasm and vision will allow us to continue to provide the highest level of care to our residents.

Family Picnic

2010 Family Picnic

Residents enjoy the Elvis entertainer at last year's family picnic.

On Wednesday, Aug. 10, Poet's Seat Health Care Center will be holding its annual family picnic at noon at our location at 359 High Street in Greenfield. This year's theme is "country/western," and all residents' family members are invited to attend. Food, beverages and entertainment will be provided, free of charge. This is a great opportunity to visit a family member, as well as meet some of the other residents and their families, all while enjoying a great meal.

If you have any questions, please contact the activities director Zenaida Diaz at (413) 774-6318. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

In The Community

Poet's Seat Healthcare Center will be conducting a "Breathe Easy" respiratory presentation on Thursday, August 11 from 1-2 p.m. at the Holyoke Council on Aging (310 Apple Street, Holyoke). This presentation focuses on good pulmonary health, and improving self-care for those with COPD. A Registered Pulmonary Therapist will be available to discuss the aspects of identifying the early stages of respiratory problems, as well as preventative measures that can be taken. All participants will also receive a free breathing screening and assessment.
