A Trip to Little Rock & ANDY with our Chair
| |
I have now had the privilege of chairing AbleChildAfrica's board for three years. In all this time I have never felt that our work was more worthwhile than I did during our recent visit to our partners Little Rock and ANDY in Nairobi.

The main purpose of the visit was to see the progress on the construction of Little Rock's new inclusive early childhood development centre, which has been generously funded by Euromoney and a number of major banks. The building site was a hive of activity and meeting all those involved in the project gave us welcome assurance that the centre is set to open on time in January 2013.
I was just as pleased to meet up with ANDY and their inspirational director Fred Ouko, to see the benefit of our programme funded by Comic Relief which helps youths with disabilities benefit from both sport and employment. We went to see a small business set up by a young woman in Kibera, providing internet access and computer training. She told us how much confidence she had gained from ANDY's sports programme and how this had helped her progress her business.

Thank you to all of our supporters who have made this build possible. If you are not already a Friend of AbleChildAfrica, I would encourage you to sign up and help us to sustain this work with a regular gift.
Little Rock and ANDY are just two of AbleChildAfrica's five current partners. Alongside Kenya, amazing work is also happening in Uganda and Tanzania.

Ella's Volunteering Update
| |
Hi Everyone!
My name is Ella and I am currently volunteering at AbleChildAfrica. I've been here for about 3 months and I'm helping them create a Child Participation Toolkit, which, once completed will be a good practice guide that will provide practitioners with some activities and information that will support the active inclusion of children with disabilities in AbleChildAfrica's work in Africa. I am currently studying for a Masters in International Development. AS part of my course I have to complete a placement at an NGO and I'm so glad I did my placement at AbleChildAfrica, as they are the only UK based NGO that works specifically with children with disabilities in Africa. and although the placement has finished I still hope to continue working with them. What I really love about AbleChildAfrica is the fact that they focus on a local response to a local problem by working closely with their partner organisations and providing them with support, information and the all important funding. One of my main interests in International Development is child participation; I firmly believe that all children should have the opportunity to be involved in making changes and decisions about things that affect them and so I was thrilled to do some work with AbleChildAfrica around this. I have learnt so much during my time volunteering at AbleChildAfrica. The experience has been really interesting and extremely valuable and I'm so grateful to the whole team for all their help and support and mainly for giving me the opportunity to be involved! Thanks! Ella
