Greetings!

Welcome to your monthly e-news update from AbleChildAfrica. This month we bring you the launch of The Extraordinary Mile, updates from ANDY via a visit from one of our UK volunteers and an inspiring tandem cycle across the UK.
The Extraordinary Mile!

On Saturday 16th June 2012, in celebration of the International Day of the African Child, we launched our annual flagship event on Clapham Common: The Extraordinary Mile.

There was
a lot to do inside the Sensory Yurt!

The Extraordinary Mile was attended by children and families from the local community who came out to support raising awareness of the needs of children with disabilities in Africa and their right to education, healthcare and inclusion within their communities. Children and their family and friends from the local community journeyed The Extraordinary Mile route, along which were games and activities, entertainment, a sensory yurt (provided by our friends at Access Events) and a chance to learn about Africa and the work that AbleChildAfrica does there.

As there are very few public and free events in the UK that are truly inclusive and accessible for all children and families, The Extraordinary Mile was an opportunity for all children and their families to come together, and from the response of those that attended, it was greatly appreciated.

As the first of many Extraordinary Miles to come, the day was a huge success, and if you would like to read more or find out about how you can be involved in the future, click here.

A huge thank you also goes out to all of our volunteers and team who made the day such a success, we'll see you all next year!

ANDY - Chris's Visit

Chris James, who has been helping us develop our Monitoring and Evaluation strategy, recently ventured over to ANDY to conduct research for his masters dissertation on Children, Youth & Education. While there he agreed to support ANDY to develop their own M&E strategies even further. Here are a few snippets from his time there.

It's 11am in a YMCA Sports Hall in Shauri Moyo on the outskirts of Nairobi and I'm settling down in my wheelchair for my first ever game of wheelchair basketball and I'm a little nervous. 10 minutes later, I have sweat dripping down my face and my arms feel like I've just done a million press ups. I'm also beaming from ear to ear.

It's 2am in the Nyayo Stadium swimming pool in Nairobi. I dive in and start my length of front crawl. I look across and I'm being overtaken by a teenage girl!! This is a dent to my pride. I look again....it's Anne. Anne has legs missing from the knee down. We reach the end of the pool. It's Anne who has the beaming smile this time!

I was in Nairobi to do some research on the impact that Action Network for the Disabled (ANDY) are having on young Kenyan's in Nairobi through their Sport and Access to Work Programmes. Without writing up the raw data I can safely say that it's having a profound and life changing effect on many - from boosting people's self confidence and esteem, improving physical fitness, to reducing stigma and building lasting friendships. The young people that ANDY work with also have a chance to take up an internship or get a business loan. This gives them an opportunity to make the positive changes to their lives sustainable.

ANDY are one of AbleChildAfrica's partners who receive funding and technical support to continue and expand the amazing work they are doing.

Skelton's Tandem Adventure & Nightrider Challenge

Andy and Lynn Skelton from Yorkshire were delighted to support AbleChildAfrica by taking 2 of their spaces on the London Nightrider.

The next question was "How do we get the tandem to London?"

The obvious answer (at least to them!) was to ride it there but since their usual routes to the capital (the M1 or A1) were out of the question an alternative had to be found. Following canal towpaths seemed an obvious choice (tandems don't like hills) and so a route was plotted all the way from Huddersfield to Camden Locks.

On the positive side canal towpaths are level. On the negative side, they added another 450 kms to the 100 km to the Nightrider route, not to mention crossing the Pennines and negotiating more than 200 locks and at least 12 tunnels.

On their bright yellow tandem and wearing their bright orange AbleChildAfrica tee shirts, they attracted attention and sponsorship along the way.

Andy & Lynn experienced their share of challenges with towpaths, locked gates, weather and even a dip in the canal but donation worthy perseverance saw them arrive in London in time for the Nightrider challenge on Saturday, the 9th of June.

Once in London they met up with their two children, Pete and Jen Skelton and the rest of AbleChildAfrica's team of 10 cyclists for the all night challenge.  Together the team raised over £4,000 of vital funds with some donations still to be counted!

Thank you to the entire AbleChildAfrica Nightrider team!!
