Welcome to your monthly e-news update from AbleChildAfrica. This month we bring you updates from our partner ANDy and their olympian progress with the Sport for Health project, an insight into the work of our current Administrative Intern, Ruby; and an exciting introduction to the upcoming Extraordinary Mile.
ANDY and the Sport for Health Project

ANDY is delivering a 'Sports for Change' programme in partnership with AbleChildAfrica and supported by Comic Relief, which offers opportunities for economic empowerment as well as regular sports clubs to improve the self esteem, confidence and health of young people with disabilities so they can reach their full potential.

Here are some excerpt updates and a case study from their great work. Click here to read the full news article.

The business plans ultimately are vetted and participants issued with grants towards expansion or initiating businesses.

An Insight from our Intern, Ruby

Hello everyone! My name is Ruby Waterworth and I am AbleChildAfrica's current Administrative Intern

Alongside our Administrator, Nick McKenzie, I do the daily office duties and am in charge of our 35 dedicated Virgin London Marathon runners. I have found this element of my internship by far the most enjoyable - all feedback from, and correspondence with, our runners has been extremely positive and it is great to get to know our Marathon Team.

I decided to join AbleChildAfrica because I wanted to work for an organisation that sought to better the lives of youths with disabilities and that truly valued disabled young people as active members of the community. It was very important to me that AbleChildAfrica supported what appeared to be very impressive grassroots African organisations that find African solutions to African problems. I wasn't disappointed - our African partners are truly inspiring in what they have accomplished in their communities.

What is brilliant about any internship at AbleChildAfrica is that interns are made to feel highly valued members of the organisation and are given the opportunity to voice the areas they find the most interesting/challenging in monthly Learning Objective meetings. From these discussions, targets are outlined as areas to work and expand on, so that each intern's experience is tailored to their own requirements. In this sense, internships at AblechildAfrica have been designed to be programmes in which to learn and gain valuable working experience.

The Extraordinary Mile is coming!

On 16th June 2012, the International Day of the African Child, our new annual event will launch on Clapham Common. The event will focus on raising awareness of disabled children's rights in Africa and in the UK and encourage guests to join us in advocating for equal opportunities.

Logo only'The Extraordinary Mile' will provide free, accessible entertainment and education for kids and families, based around the idea of travelling an extraordinary and educational mile through the park, taking a journey into the lives and stories of some of the extraordinary people we work with through materials and activities along the way.

We'll also keep you and the kids entertained with live music, activities and face painting, they'll be food and drink available, and hopefully plenty of sunshine to keep everyone happy!

We believe in going the extra mile for disabled children, please come and travel (walk, hop, skip, jump, wheel or cartwheel) that extraordinary mile with us and discover a bit more about the amazing people we work with.

Saturday 16th June - Clapham Common
11:00 - 15:00
