It's finally June, which can mean only one thing. The last HSA general meeting is coming up. Yes, this Thursday, at 7, in the cafetorium. As always, we have a full agenda. We're going to vote on the 2012-13 budget for details. If you can't make it to the meeting, please be sure to download and complete a proxy ballot (also available in the Great Hall). Return those to the HSA Secretary's drawer in the Great Hall.

The real focus of the meeting, however, will be to recognize some of the extraordinary people who make Lafayette a great school. We'll present our annual Marquis de Lafayette Awards and recognize our "retiring" teachers. We'll present awards near the beginning of the meeting, so please come out to say thank you to these remarkable volunteers and teachers.

Feedback on Drop-off/Parking Policy Wanted

Lafayette has had the new drop-off and parking policy in place for a week now. This is our pilot phase, so we'd like to hear from you so we can make adjustments as needed. How's it working for you? What's working well and what could be improved?

We know it takes a while to get into new habits, and the staff and parent volunteers have been very appreciative of everyone's patience and positive attitudes. If you have comments or suggestions, please email Lisa Resch, Jenny Murray, or Lynn Main. Thank you!

The Book Fair is This Weekend at

Politics and Prose!

books

Here are the Top Five Reasons you should come to the Book Fair on Saturday, June 9th, anytime from 9 a.m. -8 p.m.:

5. It's a great chance to buy Father's Day gifts and get your summer beach reading. You can also find music, books, travel guides and all kinds of gifts you might need for this summer!

4. Politics & Prose is on the way home from wherever you may be this Saturday, whether it's baseball, soccer, or the pool. Come by and shop!

3. Amazon.com is great, but this is a chance to support a local bookstore and business that gives back to our community.

2. Twenty percent (20%) of the book fair sales from this day will benefit the HSA. The donation is $1 for every $5 dollars you spend at the store on Saturday.

1. And finally, the class with the highest attendance at the fair has the chance to win a pizza party before the end of the school year. This competition is open to every grade at Lafayette, so come and visit the Book Fair this Saturday!  See you there!

Bonus Reason: The pre-ordered books for grades 2-4 will be available for pick-up at the bookstore all day during the Fair. Come by to pick up your books and shop.

Sumdog Competition, Apple Donations, and Educational Website Recommendations

Nathan Wieand, Technology Coordinator

This year, our school has been using the Sumdog.com website, which uses fun multiplayer games to encourage students to practice their mathematics. Now, Sumdog has launched a "Summer Mathematics Challenge," to encourage children to keep practicing over the summer.

To complete the challenge, children must correctly answer 100 questions a day for a total of 20 days. As a reward, children are given 2000 bonus "Sumdog Coins" that they can use to customize their avatar in the virtual shop. Also, for every child that completes the challenge, the school will receive a free subscription to Sumdog for a student until the end of 2012. This allows teachers to use Sumdog's premium features, such as reporting and analysis tools.

Field Day Thanks

field day pictureThank you to everyone who helped with our field days last week. Both field days were a huge success. There are too many people to list; it was a true community effort. Thank you to all the parents, teachers and students who volunteered to run stations, set up, and help with clean up. It is a huge undertaking to run events for over 700 children and would not have been possible without the generosity of all who helped.

I was not able to take pictures during the day. If anyone has pictures and would be willing to share them, please send copies to me at [email protected]

Thanks again for a great day. Peace Out,

Ms. McClure

Physical Education Teacher

Medication Pick-up:  Don't Forget

To all parents of children with medication at school:  Please pick up all medications no later than Friday June 14th at 12:15.  We cannot store medications at school; therefore any medications left at school must be destroyed.  Thank you in advance and I hope you all have a safe and happy summer! --Chris Cockrell, R.N.

directory

Advertise in the 2012-13 Family Directory

Each year the HSA publishes a Family Directory that is given to every family in the school and is checked many times each week when arranging play dates, contacting room parents, scheduling volunteer activities, and the like. We invite parents and local businesses to support Lafayette by advertising in the Directory. With over 500 families at the school, your ad will be seen by many eyes!

We will work again this year with Mike Schoen and his team from A to Z Directories to produce a professional, quality Directory.  There are full page ($350), half page ($225) and business card ($125) advertising opportunities available. As in past years, there will be a lottery for premium spots: the back cover, the inside front and back covers, and the divider pages.

Parents/businesses interested in a premium location or a regular ad should email Mike or call 301-806-4376. The deadline for the lottery for premium spots is Friday, July 6, 2012; for regular ads, the deadline is September 5, 2012.

Thank you for supporting our school!

Directory Volunteers Needed

Looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity that ends by late October? Join the Directory team! Two experienced parent volunteers are looking to add a third member to the team. You will coordinate with staff and other parents to collect info for the directory, work with the directory database, and help to follow up with families whose data is incomplete.

The majority of the work takes place in September and October. One person is needed as a committed member of the team; two more could be used for just a two-week period to email/call families whose data is incomplete. If you can help, please contact Laura Comay. Thanks!

Opportunity to Host International Teacher and Interpreter

As part of an exchange program run by the American Councils for International Education, Mrs. Pereira, Lafayette's ESL teacher, has been chosen to host a teacher and interpreter from Thailand from October 13- November 1, 2012. In turn, she will be traveling to Thailand in the summer of 2013.The purpose of this exchange is to increase awareness of global issues in education while enhancing the professional development of the teachers involved, along with fostering cultural awareness for the school community.

Basically, we will need a couple of families to have these two people stay at their house while they shadow Mrs. Pereira and other teachers at Lafayette during the daytime.

Mrs. Pereira and her family will be hosting the guests for their first week in the US, and she thought it would be a great opportunity for the visitors and a Lafayette family if a family would be willing to host them for the second week. The only requirement would be to provide room and board, as the teacher and interpreter will be spending all day, Monday through Friday, at the school. Any other travel around the city will be on their own or organized by Mrs. Pereira.

If you are interested in being a host and/or have questions about this opportunity please e-mail Ms. Pereira or call her at 202-679-5044.
