Dan Aladjem & Jenny Murray, co-presidents

Spring is in the air...have you signed up to volunteer at the Spring Fair yet?  Our hard-working Spring Fair chairs (Marilyn Kitzes, Julie Maner, Barbara Frye and Kristi Teems) get very stressed when they see lots of blank spots on the sign-up sheet with the Fair only 2 weeks away! Each class is assigned an activity to cover, and parents are asked to sign up for a 1-hour slot. Please jump in and do your part by using the easy online sign-up. Just look for your class teacher's name and pick an open slot. You'll feel better once you do!

One other reminder... One week from today (4/24) is the Principal's Office Hours from 8:45 - 9:30am. This time is set aside for you to talk with Mrs. Main and/or Mr. McCoy about anything you'd like! The location is undecided yet, so please come to the Great Hall and I'll be there to point you in the right direction.  -Jenny

HSA and LSAT Candidate Statements

We now have candidates for all open positions on the HSA Board and the LSAT. Thanks to all the parents who've stepped up to participate. Please take a moment to read the statements of the HSA candidates and the LSAT candidates. A few reminders from our Spring Fair team:

luauCall for Tiny Toys
Do have tiny, gently used (but clean) toys you'd like to donate to the Spring Fair? We'd like to recycle them and use them for prizes throughout
the day of the fair. Please put your toys in the "Toy Collection" box in the Great Hall. The box will be next to the security desk. Thank you!

The Spring will be having a Bike Swap again this year on May 5. Please contact Jeff Hagquist for information on where to bring your donated bicycle.

Calling all Cupcakes!
Start planning what flavors you will bring to the SPRING FAIR BAKE SALE!!! We can use all kinds of baked goods, so ask YOUR kids about the treats THEY would spend their allowance on!!!
Calling all Volunteers!

Lafayette Needs Your Used Books + CDs!

Please donate your gently used books, cds, and video games for the Book Sale at the Lafayette Spring Fair. Drop off in the Great Hall or, for larger donations, email co-chairs Teresa Gionis or Gayle Moseley. No VHS tapes, textbooks or encyclopedias please. Children's books especially welcome.
From "The Oasis" at Lafayette (Counselor's Corner)

This is just a reminder that our new online discussion group will begin this Thursday, 4/19, at 2:30pm. The book we will be reading is "The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness: Five Steps to Help Kids Create and Sustain Lifelong Joy" by Dr. Edward Hallowell.  A wonderful parent volunteer has worked out a deal with Child's Play where Lafayette parents and staff can get the book at 20% off just by going to the counter and requesting it!  The link to our Google Group can be found here, and the first session will be on Chapters 1-7:  an overview of the main ideas of the book, and a focus on the first concept of "A Connected Childhood."  To see the breakdown for the rest of the sessions, our discussion questions for session 1, or to post a message related to your thoughts or questions, go check out the site. We look forward to "chatting" with you soon!  PS:  if any parents are interested in coming in person during the session times, that is welcome too!  Please drop us a message at Jillian.Diesner@dc.gov.  Thanks!

New Lafayette Step Team
The new Lafayette "Step in Step team photoOur World" Step Team has officially kicked off! On Wednesday, March 28 the Lafayette Step Team electrified an audience of their peers, parents, teachers and administrators by performing various step routines using their entire body as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps in Bear arena. Each stepper was fully dressed wearing matching t-shirts, masks, caps, jeans and sneakers. The tradition of African stepping is rooted within the competitive schoolyard song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities. More shows have been planned for the future using props such as canes, rhythm sticks and blindfolds.

Join us for tips on raising responsible digital citizens, internet safety for elementary aged children, family media management, cyber-bullying, texting and cell phone use.  Our speaker will be Dr. Ruth Zitner, a Lafayette parent and clinical and forensic psychologist with over 20 years of helping children and families find emotional well-being and balance in their individual and family lives.  She has worked with many children, teens and parents in creating sensible media plans and fostering dialogue between children and parents.

Join us to talk about the connections between food and common childhood ailments such as anxiety, recurrent ear infections, stomachaches, picky eating, rashes, ADHD, and more. Our speaker, Kelly Dorfman, is a nutritionist who has specialized in the connection between children's health and behavior and the food they eat. Ms. Dorfman has been called a nutrition detective who integrates information from many sources to find practical solutions for even the most complex ailments and symptoms. She is also a popular speaker and workshop leader and author of the book, What's Eating Your Child? The Hidden Connections Between Food and Childhood Ailments, which was published last year.

Arts Integration Open House

Jackie Snowden, Arts Integration Coordinator

Parents: as we continue to "embrace the concept of using Arts Integration as an approach to teaching"(LES Vision/Mission Statement), we  would like to invite you to our first Arts Integration Open House. Each classroom teacher will be teaching an arts integrated lesson for you to see for yourself one of the many ways we are integrating the arts at Lafayette. Although not every lesson is an arts integrated lesson, we are designating two specific days when an arts integrated lesson will be taught for you to see: Monday, May 7 and Tuesday, May 8 from 9:00 a.m. - 12 p.m. A more detailed schedule with the specific days and times each teacher will be demonstrating will be posted in next week's Tuesday Bulletin for you to plan accordingly. We look forward to seeing you and welcome your feedback. Please feel free to email Jackie Snowden with any questions or comments.

Support the Avon Walk AND our Beloved Margaret Quinn

For the third year in a row my daughter and I are participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer here in DC, May 5 & 6.  We will be walking 40 miles in 2 days to raise awareness and to raise money to help fund breast cancer research and treatment here in the DC area.  In order to walk, my team needs $3600 and we'd love to raise even more for the cause!  If you would like to donate, you can do so online at www.avonwalk.org/goto/MargaretQuinn or by dropping off a check made out to "Avon Walk for Breast Cancer" with Kia Ghamarian in Pre-K.  Thank you to all the parents and teachers who have already donated--the support of the Lafayette community means so much to me.  -- Margaret Quinn
