Greetings!
May is a busy month. With Mother's Day right around the corner and confusing weather patterns, we don't blame you for having been out of touch with the shooting world. We're here to reign you back in and provide quick blurbs on the latest and greatest from USA Shooting. If you like what you see, click on the headlines for more information or the full story. We have some outstanding performances by both USA Shooting Team athletes at the Beijing World Cup and future team members blazing away at the National Junior Olympic Championships in Colorado Springs, CO. Spare five, ten, or even fifteen minutes to catch up and learn how your favorite shooters are rocking the world. |
| Why is Daryl Szarenski all Smiles? |
(c) 2010 ISSF Marco Dalla Dea | You would be too if you just won two gold World Cup (WC) medals in Beijing. Silencing the competition in both the Men's 50m Pistol and Men's Air Pistol, Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU)'s Szarenski is making his mark with his third WC medal in less than two months and two WCs. Or is it because Szarenski's hardware marks the first US double gold in both events since 1988. Or perhaps that grin is because he shot from 6th place to 1st in Air Pistol... no big deal. |
| Meet the Midas Queen: Kim Rhode |
(c) 2010 ISSF Marco Dalla Dea |
If King Midas ever had a queen, her name was Kim... Rhode, to be exact. Tying her own world record of 98 (out of 100), Rhode pulled the trigger and graciously accepted gold in Beijing in Women's Skeet. With her regal wave and dominating competition presence, Kim bagged her second gold on the WC circuit this year. Look for her in August at the World Shooting Championships as she continues to add to her point total for 2012 Olympic team qualification. |
| #1 in Your Program, #1 in Your Hearts and... |
(c) 2010 ISSF Marco Dalla Dea | #1 for the first time. AMU's Joe Hein shot for his first WC medal ever in Men's Prone. He must have done something right because he flew home with gold. Adding to the red, white, blue podium, AMU shooter Eric Uptagraft followed Hein with a bronze medal. |
| Ryan Hadden's Barrels: Too Hot to Handle |
(c) 2010 ISSF Marco Dalla Dea | Ryan Hadden needs to blow the smoke out of his gun after nailing 138 targets in the qualification and final round in Men's Trap. This AMU Houdini pulled a bronze medal out of his hat as he shot up from last in the final round to a third place finish. Congratulations Ryan, when's your next show? |
| Let's Give Them a Round |
While not medalists, we need to recognize their stellar shooting. Resident athletes Amy Sowash (left) and Emily Carouso (right) made the Women's Air Rifle final and finished 4th and 5th respectively. Knocking on the door of perfection, Sowash shot a preliminary round score of 399... out of 400.

| Creating JUNIOR Champions in Sport & Life: 2010 NJOSC |
April saw three weeks of JO competition at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs with over 350 shooters. Between the bags of equipment, parents, competitors, and vendor stations, the shooting center was bustling with activity. Kudos and bragging rights, however, belong to the ladies as their shooting was outstanding. On the men's side, we saw a sea of blue and yellow on the podium as Alaska Fairbanks Rifle Team members found their way to the top slots and all-star line-ups.
