Conference on The Governorship and Legacy of

J. Howard Edmondson

The OU Center for Studies in Democracy and Culture (OU-Tulsa), the OU Center for Political Communication (Norman Campus), and the Oklahoma Historical Society are sponsoring the first of an annual series of "mini-conferences" on Oklahoma governors. The first conference will be held at the Oklahoma History Center on Wednesday, January 18, and Thursday, January 19th.

 

The cost for attending the entire conference, including meals, is $50.00. Individuals also may attend only one day of the conference at a cost of $25.00. Payment in advance is not required; guests may pay when arriving on Wednesday or Thursday, but reservations must be made

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the 18th, the conference will begin with a cash bar reception and stand-up buffet (limited seating available), followed by a presentation by former governor George Nigh, who served as Lieutenant governor during the Edmondson administration.

 

Registration will open on Thursday the 19th at 8:00 a.m. with registration, coffee, and breakfast rolls. Former U. S. Senator Fred R. Harris will speak at 8:45 a.m. on "Oklahoma Government and Politics in the 1950s and 1960s." Panels of legislators who served during the Edmondson administration will be featured during the remainder of the morning, followed by a luncheon featuring J. Leland Gourley as speaker. Gourley served as Edmondson's Chief of Staff.

 

Following the luncheon a panel of academics will discuss the legacy of the Edmondson administration and members of the Edmondson family will share personal reminisces of Governor Edmondson and his wife, Jeanette. The conference is expected to conclude shortly after 3:00 p.m.

Woody Crumbo 100th Birthday Celebration

Woody Crumbo was born January 31, 1912, on his mother's allotment near Lexington, Oklahoma.  A Citizen Potawatomi tribal member, he dedicated his life and talent to the sincere portrayal of American Indian thought and culture through his art.

 

The Oklahoma History Center will host a special birthday celebration in honor of theWoody Crumbo Art 100th anniversary of Woody Crumbo's birth.  On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at 4pm, a preview of Woody Crumbo's artwork will be held along with a special program honoring the life and career of this great artist.  Special guests for the event will include Minisa Crumbo Halsey, daughter of the late Woody Crumbo.
