Oklahoma and the Day that will live in Infamy
Exhibit Opens Monday, December 5th
Oklahoma History Center
Oklahoma City, OK
by Matt Reed, Curator of American Indian Collections
December 7th of this year is a pivotal anniversary. It will be the 70th anniversary of the entry of the United States into World War II with the simultaneous attacks on Wake Island, Guam, the Philippines and Hawaii.
Why is it a "pivotal" anniversary? This current generation will bridge the gap between the living veterans of these events and the memory of what happened to these men and women, or the memories of what they experienced.
Although there weren't any Japanese planes that attacked the state of Oklahoma, many Oklahomans experienced the devastation those planes unleashed on that part of the world. With this new exhibit, Oklahoma and the Day that will live in Infamy, we hope to tell these important stories so that succeeding generations will remember tyranny and its effects in the hope that it will not be repeated.
Some of the artifacts on display are a Japanese flight suit and naval uniforms, artifacts from aboard the USS Oklahoma during the attack at Pearl Harbor, and letters from a bereaved mother to her son that she would never see again. The exhibit will also feature several interviews with veterans of Pearl Harbor, Wake Island and the Philippines. |

Enjoy Holiday Shopping at the Museum Store
Oklahoma History Center
Oklahoma City, OK
by Robbin Davis, Director of Visitor Services
The holidays are quickly approaching and the Museum Store has many items to delight friends and family. We now have several classic games in stock that make great gifts for people of all ages. And, don't forget, OHS members receive a discount on all purchases made at the Museum Store!
Pente was developed in Stillwater, Oklahoma, by Gary Gabrel in 1977. An example of a Pente game is included in the galleries of the Oklahoma History Center, and now patrons can take home their very own game to enjoy.
The Life and Risk! games are reproductions of the original releases. Each game has the original package art and original design of the game board and pieces. These time-honored games are a must for family game night.
We also have game reproductions from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. These games range from simple games such as Leapfrog, comprised of a playing board and a few wooden player pieces, to complex games such as Baseball, a wooden pinball game based on America's favorite pastime.
The Museum Store is a great destination for all your holiday shopping. Our new OU and OSU Holiday ornaments are perfect for the sports fans in your life. We offer unique items created by Oklahoma artisans and companies, too.
Thanks for your continued patronage and support of the Oklahoma History Center Museum Store, and we look forward to helping you celebrate the holidays. Contact us at (405)522-5214 or giftshop@okhistory.org with any questions or suggestions.
