New Visitors Center at Battle of Honey Springs Site

Honey Springs Battlefield

Checotah, OK

A brand new 5000-square-foot visitors center will be built to mark the site of Oklahoma's largest Civil War battle.  The $1.9 million center will be constructed with a public-private partnership at the site of the Battle of Honey Springs.

The partnership will involve the Oklahoma Historical Society, McIntosh County and a local nonprofit organization, as well as several federal agencies.

The USDA Rural Development announced $500,000 in grants and more than $600,000 in loans to the Friends of Honey Springs nonprofit organization.  The Friends group will lease the land from the Oklahoma Historical Society and build the new visitors center.  The expected date for completion is July, 2013.  This date marks the 150th anniversary of the battle.

The Engagement at Honey Springs (called The Affair at Elk Creek by the Confederates) was the largest of more than 107 documented hostile encounters in the Indian Territory.  The engagement took place on a rainy Friday, July 17, 1863, between the 1st Division, Army of the Frontier, commanded by Major General James G. Blunt and the Confederate Indian Brigade led by Brigadier General Douglas H. Cooper.  And, according to Dr. Bob Blackburn, OHS Executive Director, this was the largest battle in which white, black, American Indian and Hispanic troops fought on each side.  Read the report pertaining to the Engagement at Honey Springs, Indian Territory.
