Doaksville Candle Light Tour
September 30, 2011 First Tour 6:30pm
Fort Towson Historic Site, Fort Towson
The Doaksville archeological site provides a glimpse of the diverse historic and cultural past of southeast Oklahoma. Here a trading post was established during the early 1820s by Josiah Doaks. With the signing of treaties, Dancing Rabbit Creek and Doaks Stand, Doaksville became a major destination in what would later become known as Indian Territory. With the military post nearby at Fort Towson for protection, Doaksville became the largest town in Indian Territory in 1850 and the commercial center of the Choctaw Nation.
A walking candlelight tour of this first capital of the Choctaw Nation will be held on September 30th. The first tours start at 6:30pm and repeat every 45 minutes until 10pm. A group of scenes depicting the early years of the town inform visitors of historical events that took place. This year the theme incorporates regional events associated with the War between the states from the surrender of Brig. General Stand Watie to camp life, justice and the Choctaw code of honor.
Reservations are requested, but not required. Please contact Fort Towson Historic Site at (580)873-2634 for more information. |
