EMMY SCOTT STIDHAM ELECTED PRESIDENT OF

OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY BOARD OF DIRECTORS, 2011

 

Checotah resident Emmy Scott Stidham conducted her first meeting as the newly elected President of the Oklahoma Historical Society Board of Directors on Wednesday, July 27, 2011. Stidham was elected president by the Board of Directors during the annual meeting of the Oklahoma Historical Society held this spring.

 

Other officers elected include Dr. Bill Corbett, Tahlequah, Vice President, and Leonard Logan, Vinita, Treasurer.

Oklahoma. She was first elected to the Oklahoma Historical Society Board of Directors in 1988. She previously served as Vice President and Secretary of the board. And, during her tenure as a board member, has served on a number of committees within the board.

 

She served as a board member of Checotah MainStreet for eight years, serves as publicity chair for the Checotah Chamber of Commerce and was the chamber's Member of the Year in 1996 and 2003. She is a founding member of Friends of Honey Springs Battlefield. She is the founding president and current projects chairman of the Checotah Landmark Preservation Society and was instrumental in saving and relocating the local 1890 Katy Railroad depot and placing it, the Methodist church and downtown business district on the National Register of Historic Places. She was named the McIntosh Democrat's Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1986, McIntosh County Citizen of the Year in 1992 and received the Oklahoma Heritage Association's Distinguished Service Award for Preservation of State and Local History in 1996.

 

She is a member of the Oklahoma Methodist Conference Committee on Archives and History, is a delegate in P.E.O International, Past President of Checotah's Jim Lucas Library, and trustee of the Centennial Heartland Heritage Center.

 

Stidham has been a Life Member of the Oklahoma Historical Society since 1985.

Cowgirl Open House

Sunday August 7, 2011 2-4 PM

Tom Mix Museum, Dewey, OK

 

Desiree Michaelson will be the special guest. Desiree will be re-enacting Lucile Mulhall early day Oklahoma cowgirl and Wild West show star. "Lucile" will give a short performance and share information about this colorful early day Oklahoma performer.

 

Local cowgirl and artist, Karen Michno, will be displaying her "Cowgirl" art work and prints.

 

Author Monica James' book, Buckskin Bessie Her Lost Letters, is available in the gift shop. Bessie Herberg was a Wild West show performer with the 101 Ranch. Her story is told through a collection of letters written to her sister over several decades.

 

We will have a series of Cowgirls of the Dewey Roundup postcards available. These are reproductions of postcards from the Dewey Roundup in the teens & 1920's.
