Oklahomans and Space "Red Dirt to Rockets"
A Celebration of Oklahomans Contributions to the Space Program
May 25, 2011, 5:30pm, Oklahoma History Center
This event is a celebration of Oklahoma astronauts, scientists, engineers, mission control staff, and others who have made significant contributions to NASA and the space program. At this time, five of the six living Oklahoma astronauts are committed to attending. Present will be astronauts Tom Stafford (Gemini 6 & 9, Apollo 10, Apollo-Soyuz); Fred Haise (Apollo 13); John Herrington (Space Shuttle); William Pogue (Apollo-Skylab); and Shannon Lucid (Space Shuttle, MIR). To date 14 engineers, project members, scientists and others from the space program have also indicated that they will attend. In addition, the event will provide an opportunity for the release of a new book titled, "Oklahomans and Space," by Bill Moore. A preview of a multi-part documentary on Oklahomans and the Space Program will also be shown. The event is timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's "We are going to the Moon" speech.

Pickin' and Grinnin': Roy Clark, Hee Haw, and
Country Humor
Now on exhibit at the History Center is "Pickin' and Grinnin': Roy Clark, Hee Haw, and Country Humor." This exhibit celebrates Oklahoma's ties to the beloved television show. Centered on Tulsan Roy Clark, the exhibit features other Oklahomans that appeared on the show as cast members or guest stars. These include Gailard Sartain, Jana Jae, Ricki Page, Garth Brooks, Roger Miller, Jody Miller, Reba McEntire, and many, many more. The Gaylord family, who purchased Hee Haw in 1981, is another cornerstone to the story. Through WKY radio and television, movies, and a vast Nashville complex that included Opryland and the Grand Ole Opry, three generations of Gaylords have supported Country music and humor.
On exhibit through May 2012. |
