Wide Open for Preservation:  Oklahoma's 23rd Annual Statewide Preservation Conference

Guymon, Oklahoma

June 8-10, 2011

In the next few days, the program and registration brochure for Wide Open for Preservation:  Oklahoma's 23rd Annual Statewide Preservation Conference will be arriving in mailboxes and available on the SHPO's section of the OHS website.  In the meantime, take a look at the conference schedule-at-a-glance.  The conference speakers include preservation professionals, local leaders, property owners, and government agency representatives from Oklahoma and across the nation.  Short bios of each of them are available at the above website.

It is not too early to think about your travel plans.  Would you like a ride to Guymon with friends and colleagues?  Then plan to reserve a seat on the charter bus that departs from the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City at 7:00am on Wednesday, June 8, with a short breakfast stop in Watonga and a rest stop in Woodward to pick up box lunches, arriving at the conference location at 1:00pm.  Shuttle service to and from hotels will be available.  The bus returns to Oklahoma City after the Plenary Session on Friday afternoon, June 10, with a short supper stop in Laverne (arrive OKC at 10:00pm).  Ron Frantz of the Oklahoma Main Street Center will be your host and guide for the round trip, and the meal/rest stops are Oklahoma Main Street communities.  The ticket price ($120.00) includes the meals.  Information about how to make your reservation will be provided in the program and registration brochure.

We hope you can join us June 8-10 in Guymon.  If you may have any questions, contact Melvena Heisch, Deputy SHPO at (405)522-4484 or by email at mheisch@okhistory.org.

Murrell Home Lawn Social Banner

The historic George Murrell Home will hold its eighteenth annual Lawn Social on Saturday, June 4, 2011, from 5:30pm-Dusk. The Lawn Social is a living history tradition that evokes the beauty, color, and music of the Cherokee Nation.

The highlight of the program is the reenactment of an 1860 Cherokee Temperance Rally. The 3,000+ member Cherokee Temperance Society, established in Indian Territory immediately after the Trail of Tears, promoted abstinence from intoxicating beverages. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear from reenactors portraying real characters of the society, in their original words. Guests will also be able to participate in period dancing and the temperance "March of Allegiance," a re-creation of an historic 1860 event.

The Lawn Social is an official Oklahoma Civil War Sesquicentennial event. The 1860 event will give visitors a glimpse of life in the Cherokee Nation at the beginning of the devastating American Civil War. Other evening activities include house tours, demonstrations on nineteenth-century crafts and customs, children's games and activities, food, and a historic minstrel show.

The Lawn Social is free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for sitting on the lawn. For more information, contact the Murrell Home at (918) 456-2751.
