Oklahoma National History Day

Oklahoma History Center, Oklahoma City

May 4, 2011

It is April and students from across the state are putting the final touches on the History Day projects they have worked on all year.

OklahomHistory Day Logoa National History Day (ONHD) is an academic contest for students in 6th through 12th grades.  Each year more than 5,000 students, encouraged by hundreds of teachers statewide, participate in the ONHD contest improving their research skills and producing amazing projects.

Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites.  After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topic's significance in history, students present their work in original papers, exhibits, performances, websites and documentaries.  The students compete in 12 different district contests throughout the state.

The winners of the distric contests make their way to the Oklahoma History Center each May for the state contest, which will be held on May 4th this year.

Students can still register for the contest. The History Center is also seeking judges for all categories: Junior and Senior papers, websites, documentaries and performances. If you have an interest in history and research projects, you can be a judge!  Judging serves a vital role in our contest and also provides those who participate in important learning experience, as well as an exciting day.  If you are interested, registration is very easy and online.  Please make sure to register by April 15th!  If you have any further questions, please contact Tabby Toney at ttoney@okhistory.org.

The History Day coordinator for Oklahoma is Jason Harris and he may be reached at jharris@okhistory.org.  Oklahoma National History Day is supported by the education staff of the Oklahoma History Center and the Oklahoma Historical Society, National History Day, Sonic - America's Drive In, the Ad Astra Foundation and the Massey Family Foundation.
