OHS Annual Meeting to feature a Concert by

Michael Martin Murphey

April 27-29, 2011

 

The Annual Meeting Committee, chaired by Bob Klemme of Enid, has announced that a highlight of the Annual Meeting next April will be a concert by recording artist Michael Martin Murphey.  The concert will be held at the Briggs Auditorium on the campus of Northern OklahomaMichael Martin Murphey College in Enid on the evening of Thursday, April 28, 2011.

 

Staged by the OHS to thank the donors who made the creation of the new Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center in Enid possible, the concert is an invitation only event.  Those donors and their families will be invited to obtain tickets to the concert by the Friends of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. 

 

In addition, OHS members who register to attend the Annual Meeting will be invited.  There will be no charge for the concert but individuals must have a ticket to attend.  Annual Meeting presenters, session moderators, OHS employees and volunteers who work at the Annual Meeting also will be invited to the concert.

 

Murphey is the best-selling singer/songwriter of American Cowboy Music who also has enjoyed success as a singer/songwriter in the Pop and Country-Western fields.  A founder of the "Texas Music Scene" at Austin in 1970, he was the first singer/songwriter of this Austin scene to be signed to a major record label while living and performing in Austin.  His first "Cowboy Songs" album became the first gold album of Cowboy Music since Marty Robbins.

 

Murphey is considered to be the world's most prominent musical representative of the western horseman, the horse rancher, cattle rancher, and cowboy.

"Electrified: The Guitar Revolution"

The Smithsonian Channel details the history of the world's most popular musical instrument: the electric guitar. The story begins in the early days of the Charlie Christian's Guitar"Model U" and Rickenbacker Frying Pan and will cover the modern electric guitars made by Fender and Gibson. "Electrified" presents this fascinating history with vintage footage, interviews with rock historians, and even live performances on electric guitar.

 

For all ages. Event runs from 1pm - 3pm. Free admission.

Christmas Festivities at the Drummond Home

December 5, Hominy, OK  1-4pm 

 

Come and enjoy the Christmas festivities at the Drummond Home on Sunday, December 5th, from 1:00pm until 4:00pm.

 

The Drummond Home will be sponsoring the band, FINEGAN'S AWAKE.  Come and listen to their wonderful folk music, while enjoying the Christmas festivities.  Drummond family descendants, Dolores & Cecil Drummond, will be portraying their great grandparents, AddieDrummond Home at Christmas and Frederick, and they will be "receiving" guests at the door!  Santa Claus will also be visiting to pass out treats to good boys and girls, and adults, too! 

 

The Drummond Home will

Winter Solstice Walks
December 21st, 11am, 2pm, 7pm
Spiro Mounds, Spiro

Archaeologist and manager, Dennis Peterson, will lead guided tours starting at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Each walk will take about two hours and require a mile of easy walking. Mr. Peterson will tell about this unique prehistoric Native American mound site, the types of mounds, why they were created and why some of the mounds are lined up for the sunsets of the Solstices and Equinoxes. He will tell the history of the excavations, Native American ceremonies and stories, and tales of the unusual happenings associated with the mounds. For those wishing to see the sunset, the 2 p.m. walk will end just before sunset, which is when the alignment will take place. Come out to experience one of the most unique historical sites in the United States as seen through the eyes of an archaeologist.

There is a small fee for this series of tours of $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. No reservations are required unless you are bringing a big group. Be certain to dress for the weather. If you have questions, please call (918)962-2062.
