Rose Hill Plantation Site Archaeology Project
Rose Hill was an ante-bellum plantation owned by prominent Choctaw entrepreneur Robert M. Jones. Locating the Jones home site was the main goal of a recent archaeology project conducted as a cooperative effort between two state agencies and a volunteer group. Amanda Regneir and Scott Hammerstedt, were the principal archaeologists from the Oklahoma Archeological Survey. The OHS site is a satellite of the Fort Towson Historic Site. Several OHS employees coordinated or worked on the dig. John Davis, Fort Towson, manages the site and coordinated the recent project. Linda Schwann, SHPO, wrote the National Register of Historic Places nomination and helped dig. Over fifty volunteers from the Oklahoma Anthropological Society pitched in to make the dig a success. The volunteers of OAS plan to hold their Spring 2011 dig at the site to finish the work started this fall.
Over a four-day period, October 7-10, the native stone foundations of the Jones mansion began to appear in the excavations. Artifacts were recovered that provide more evidence of the estimated seventy-year long occupation of the home. The Jones family cemetery is located a few hundred feet east of the excavations. WPA workman constructed a stonewall around the plot in 1937. |
