OHS Public Relations Director is co-author of

Voice of Bedlam: The Life of Bob Barry

In more than 50 years as a radio sportscaster and 43 years as a television sports anchor, Bob Barry has broadcast more major college sporting events on radio as the play-by-play announcer than anyone else in history. Voice of Bedlam: The Life of Bob Barry, published by the Oklahoma Heritage Association, shares the life story of this iconic sports voice. The book was co-authored by Michael Dean and Bob Burke.

Dean is Public Relations Director at the OHS and is in his twentieth year as Bob Barry Book Jacketproducer/engineer, announcer on the University of Oklahoma sports network working with Bob Barry.  Books signed by Burke and Dean will be available at the Gift Shop in the Oklahoma History Center after October 16 and may be ordered online or by telephone at (405)522-5214.

Barry has called every Bedlam football game between the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University for a half century, as either the voice of the Sooners or Cowboys. He has been play-by-play announcer for football and basketball at OU for 31 years, and also spent 18 seasons as the radio voice of OSU football and basketball from 1973 to 1990. In addition to detailing Barry's life, the authors chronicle OU and OSU football and basketball.

YOUR FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS

by Beverly Mosman

Photographs are an integral part of the Oklahoma History Center.  Many of the photographs displayed in our exhibits and online are from personal family collections that have been donated to the OHS.

Why do we request originals and not photocopies?  There are several reasons, two of which are the copyright problem and the quality of the reproduction.

When originals are donated, a gift agreement is obtained from the donor stating that the OHS has the right to provide the image(s) to researchers, authors, publishers, museums, television and other media who may want to reproduce the image.

Secondly, an original negative or photograph may be scanned and reproduced much more clearly than a photocopy or copy print.

We welcome any information that can be provided on the photographs in our collections.  For instance, we sometimes receive emails that tell us, "...the man on the left beside the horse is my great-grandfather John Jones.  The photo was

taken on his farm in the early 1920's."   Any clues we can obtain to help identify photographs will help future researchers in their historical investigations.

If you have questions about your own family photographs, we would love to hear from you.  We can provide resources to answer questions about preservation, dating photographs, or how to donate your collection for public access. Moreover, we can work with you to provide digital scans of donated photos on DVD for to you to keep. For more information, please email Beverly Mosman at bmosman@okhistory.org or call (405)522-5208.

Around the World Flight Winnie Mae

This photo of the famous Winnie Mae airplane was recently donated to the OHS by a lady who found it among items that had belonged to her grandparents.  She noted that she believed that "this is when the plane landed in 1931 at Chester, England."

Oklahoma Museums Association Awards

Program - Certificate of Appreciation

The Oklahoma Historical Society would like to recognize volunteers, Thomas and Joan Galbraith, for the recent Certificate of Appreciation they recently received from the Oklahoma Museums Association.  The Certificate of Appreciation was awarded to them for their dedicated volunteerism at the Oklahoma History Center. Thomas and Joan volunteer their time every Wednesday morning and at many special events and activities. They are always at the ready to do what is needed, no questions asked. They have also assisted on several "behind the scenes" activities, doing those small things that come up at the last minute.

OHS receives double rewards for their volunteerism since they often work as a team; yet Thomas and Joan each bring individual talents to our organization.  Thomas coordinates volunteer education programs by scheduling speakers for the

brown bag luncheons and monthly meetings.  While Joan's talents as an artist and seamstress are much appreciated and well received for special programs.  They are both extremely professional and have provided many hours of invaluable service.

Thomas and Joan Galbraith certainly deserve this honor for their tireless efforts at the Oklahoma History Center. Congratulations!
