OHS Still Photo Collection
by Beverly Mosman The first photographic images were collected by the Oklahoma Historical Society in 1893. When Mr. Chester Cowen became Still Photographic Archivist in 1990 there were approximately 64,000 images in the collection. Encouraged by past Executive Director, Blake Wade, to "build" the collection, Mr. Cowen worked to add an average of 500,000 images per year. The collection now numbers approximately ten million images. Mr. Cowen retires this month, but will continue to advise and volunteer time to the development of collections. Today the OHS collection includes virtually every common form of photography
"Children of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey B. Winn,1893" [19687.IO.PH.OL.1.1] Chester R. Cowen Collection | from daguerreotypes to digitals. With the help of volunteers, approximately 60,000 images have been scanned and made available for online viewing. The collection also includes glass plates, tintypes, both black & white and color negatives, slides, panoramas and oversize prints as well as the more common smaller size prints usually contained in personal collections. Among the most commonly requested topics are Indians, Land Runs, Towns, Persons, Black History, Industries and Occupations, especially the Oil Industry. Collection images have been used around the world in magazines, books, posters, exhibits and for television and educational materials. A few of the many well- known photographers in the collection include William S. Prettyman, William Stinson Soule, and William Edward Irwin. Among many studios included are the Robertson Studio and the Meyers Photo Shot. In the OHS collection, there are over 3,000 small collections donated by individuals, families, businesses and institutions. Rachel Mosman, Associate Photo Archivist has spent the past three years processing the Barney Hillerman collection which showcases Oklahoma City.

Pioneer Woman Museum hosts Free Concerts in the Park
Ponca City
The Pioneer Woman Museum will host five concerts in the park this summer in June and July. The concerts, which are free and feature a variety of music, began on June 17 and will continue through July 22. Bringing music to the Pioneer Woman Museum was such a wonderful experience when the Rock and Roll Gallery opened with a full day of concerts on September 19th, 2009. So, continuing in that same positive direction, when Ponca City's Chamber of Commerce came to the Pioneer Woman Museum with a proposal to offer a summer music series, the answer was an enthusiastic, "Yes!" Jennifer Tippin, of Ponca City, came on board right away as Volunteer Concert Assistant to help organize performers and find a sound system, which has now been generously loaned to the museum by Chris Henderson, Ponca City. The artists will also donate their time and talent to make this series available to the public. Jazz ensemble Combo # 5 opened the summer series on June 17. You can visit their website at www.combonumber5.com to learn more. The second concert is Thursday, June 24, when Fairfax's Joey Dotson will perform a selection of Christian music. On July 8, the third concert will feature, Ponca City's own Gary Wilson. Gary and friends will bring a touch of Gospel to the stage. The summer will wind down with rhythm and blues rocker Morgan McClellan on July 15, and the series will come to a close on July 22 with the Stacy Smith and Robin Simmons duet. These talented young women will perform a variety of old and new country music, as well as selections from the 1970s. All concerts take place on a Thursday evening at 7pm and run no later than 8:30pm. Also, all concerts are free to the public. If you have questions, please call (580)765-6108. |
