OKLAHOMA HISTORY CENTER PRESENTS: THE UNCANNY ADVENTURES OF OKIE CARTOONISTS The Oklahoma History Center is opening a new exhibit focusing on Oklahoma cartoonists Saturday June 12, 2010. Did you know that Chester Gould, creator of the classic Dick Tracy comic strip, grew up in Pawnee, OK? Discover this and more in "The Uncanny Adventures of Okie Cartoonists," an interactive, kid-friendly exhibit at the Oklahoma History Center. The special opening on Saturday June 12 will feature a series of events and presentations from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The history center will charge the regular admission fee; however, those in the costume of a superhero or cartoon character will be admitted free. Oklahomans have played a major role in the evolution of comic books, comic strips, and editorial cartoons. You will discover how industry pioneers such as Chester Gould, award-winning editorial cartoonist Jim Lange of The Oklahoman, and current Supergirl and Superman writer Sterling Gates have created, drawn, or written some of the most recognizable characters in American popular culture. A caricature artist (free with admission) will be on hand to draw caricatures. The history center will have a book/cartoon signing table with Okie cartoonists and authors: . Jack & Carole Bender, Alley Oop . Terry Tidwell & John Wooley, The Twilight Avenger . Daryl Talbot, cowboy/military cartoonist . Michael Vance, comic and short story author . R.A. Jones, comic book writer, Captain America and Wolverine . Robert Wilson & Brian Winkler, Knuckleheads Another feature at the opening will be a series of presentations by authors and scholars including: Sterling Gates, Hall Duncan, and Bob Vollmar.
