OHS RESEARCH HAS ORIGINAL 1890 OK TERRITORIAL CENSUS
The Research Center has recently completed an index to the 1890 Oklahoma Territorial Census. This census is especially valuable to researchers and genealogists, as the majority of the 1890 US Federal Census was destroyed by fire. The 1890 Oklahoma Territorial Census recorded the individual's name, age at nearest birthday, relationship to the head of the family, birthplace, sex, color, number of years in the United States, length of residence in the Territory, if they were a soldier, if they had been naturalized, and if they were able to read or write. The county and town were also listed. The OHS Research Division holds the original 1890 OT census pages, which were scanned in color to create the highest quality images for researchers. A basic index to the census is available at www.okhistory.org/research/1890. Researchers can use the index to locate their ancestor; copies of the census can be ordered using our Census Express order service for a fee of $10. OHS has also recently released "1890 Resources," a DVD containing the full index to the 1890 Census, color images of more than 1,200 census pages scanned from the original documents, a newly-updated index to Smith's First Directory of Oklahoma Territory as well as color scans of the complete directory. The First Eight Months of Oklahoma City by Irving Geffs (aka Bunky.) The DVD is available for $45 plust $2 shipping and handling. More info and order forms can be found online at http://www.okhistory.org/research/library/census.html. |
PIONEER WOMAN MUSEUM FEATURES ROCK & ROLL
T-SHIRTS DESIGNED BY LOCAL STUDENT ARTISTS The Pioneer Woman Museum sponsored a local art contest for t-shirt designs in conjunction with the opening of a new gallery at the museum featuring Oklahoma's Women of Rock & Roll. In this gallery, visitors are introduced to women who have pioneered the field of music since the birth of Rock & Roll in the 50's up to today. Two Ponca City High School art students, Rachel Thompsen and Lauren Fleck, were awarded first place. Rachel's design, "Let Your Hair Down," features a young pioneer woman with

Lauren's design used legendary rock personality, Stevie Nix, as her model for the pioneer woman. She then created a design featuring a

wheat field, cattle, and even an Oklahoma-shaped tattoo, for a wonderful visual mix of traditional and modern day. The collectable t-shirt designs will be available while supplies last and feature the artist's initials and design year on the
t-shirt. The Pioneer Woman Museum features history from the pioneer era and, also, the history of women who have pioneered in their respective fields since the last land-run to the present. |
