Main Streets in Oklahoma Student Photo Contest
Every city and town has a Main Street. The street's actual name might not be Main, but the place is the same. It is the heart of the community, and to capture the Main Street feeling, we all need to take notice of the buildings, the landscapes, the people going about their business, and the special events that celebrate everything from the 4th of July to Christmas to really, really great food! Stroll around and let a photo tell the story of YOUR Main Street.
Entries accepted March 1 to April 16, 2010, winners announced April 30. The contest includes two categories: grades 1-7 and 8-12. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each category, and the winners and honorable mentions will be on display beginning May 5 at the History Center in time for the National Main Street Center conference (part of which is here at OHC.) As with all of our contests, all of the entries will be displayed on the kids section of the website. Complete info about prizes, guidelines and entry forms is on the OHS Kids! section of the website: www.okhistory.org/kids/contests.html. This contest is sponsored by OHS and the Oklahoma Main Street Center. Click here to download the entry form and guidelines.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR
UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND ARCHITECTS The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is pleased to offer special opportunities to college and university students and architects who attend Out Front in Preservation: Oklahoma's 22nd Annual Statewide Preservation Conference to be held June 9-11 in historic downtown Okmulgee (full conference registration and program details available in late April). The SHPO encourages college and university students planning preservation-related careers to attend the conference. So, we are offering twenty (20) scholarships on a first-come basis to qualified Oklahoma college and university students. The scholarship covers the conference registration fee, and the application deadline is 5:00pm, Friday, May 14. Please click here to download the application form. The SHPO believes that the conference program includes many beneficial sessions for architects and encourages them to take advantage of the conference for professional development purposes. Registered architects can earn American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) learning unit hours for their attendance, and they will only be charged the conference registration fee. For details about reporting your earned credits, contact your American Institute of Architects chapter.
The three concurent tracks of sessions include:
TRACK A: Leading the Way Features reflections on the success of Oklahoma Main Street, leadership development opportunities, and special local and tribal heritage preservation initiatives. TRACK B: Fundamentals for the Frontlines Features local design review workshops, rehabilitation standards and case studies, and special facade issues. TRACK C: First Things First Features identification of significant archeological and historic properties, research collections for preservationists, and how historic places contribute to a sense of community.
Just one of the lunch tours will provide an opportunity to learn about revitalization of the Okmulgee Historic District that surrounds the Creek Council House. Other special events will include Preservation Oklahoma, Inc.'s annual meeting and luncheon and the State Historic Preservation Office's annual awards banquet. Conference cosponsors include the State Historic Preservation Office, Oklahoma Historical Society; the Oklahoma Main Street Center, Oklahoma Department of Commerce; Preservation Oklahoma, Inc.; Okmulgee Main Street; City of Okmulgee - Historic Preservation Commission; and Creek Council House Museum.
