Bruce Fisher to speak at Northwestern State University
Northwestern Oklahoma State University Heritage Celebration Series presents Bruce. T. Fisher to speak on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 6:40 p.m., in the Education Center room 102. Fisher's presentation, "How We Missed the Boat: Interpreting the African American Experience," will be delivered through ITV to Northwestern's branch locations in Enid room 202, and the Woodward Boardroom. Fisher's presentation is free and open to the public. "This is an excellent opportunity for students and community members to hear an exceptional, nationally-known speaker," said Brad Franz, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. His presentation will highlight a number of interesting African American historical events. The lecture will feature rare video footage of historically black towns in Oklahoma circa 1928. Fisher is an administrative program officer at the Oklahoma Historical Society and curator for the development of the new African American exhibit in the Oklahoma History Center. |
Oil Field Lingo Revisited Paul Bradley, an OHS member from Winfield, Illinois, wrote to let us know that we should have pointed out that the word "tour" was pronounced "tower." Mr. Bradley also observed that "it was by no means an eight-hour shift. The old timers remember it as a twelve-hour shift, midnight to noon and noon to midnight. My father said that when the depression began, they changed initially to 8-hour shifts and subsequently to six-hour shifts . . . as a 'spread the work' measure." Thanks to Mr. Bradley for his membership and his comments on our Oil Lingo articles. |

Pioneer Woman hosts Sock Hop Fundraiser
by Valerie Haynes
The Pioneer Woman was the place to be in Ponca City on Friday, January 15th, when the PWM Advisory Board hosted the first sock hop to ever be held at the museum. The after-hours fundraiser was planned in conjunction with the PWM's newest exhibit, "Let's Have a Party!" - Oklahoma's Women of Rock 'N' Roll.
Local DJ, Larry King, emceed the event, providing a selection of crazy sounds from the 50's and 60's. Several people turned out in classic sock-hop style wearing poodle skirts, bobby socks, and letter jackets.
The museum's education room was turned into a fifties soda shop, where guests could cool their heels with a vanilla ice cream float, thanks to the generosity of the Oklahoma business community. Braum's Ice Cream and Dairy Store provided enough cups and ice cream to serve 100 people, while the local Ponca City Wal-Mart provided the soda.
A groovy time was had by all! | |

On the importance of history...
" History cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of ourselves, and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future."
