THE OKLAHOMA HISTORY CENTER PRESENTS
AN EVENING WITH MARTHA WASHINGTON

Come enjoy an evening with our nation's 1st First Lady at the Oklahoma History Center.  Through a special partnership with George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Garden the Oklahoma History Center is proud to offer an evening with Martha Washington on February 5, 2009.  The History Center will open its doors at 6:00 PM and the program will begin at 7:00.  Seating is first come and reservations are not required.  This program is free and open to the public.

Mary Wiseman brings 30 years of interpretive experience to the role of America's 1st First Lady.  Recently retired as Artistic Director for Character Interpretation and Manager of Women's History at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Mrs. Wiseman is currently concentrating her talents bringing the life and times of Martha Washington to American's of all ages.

Traveling extensively with performances throughout this country and in England, Mrs. Wiseman appeared at the White House Visitors Center, Constitution Hall, Washington's Headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Valley Forge, and has brought her portrayal of Martha Washington 'home' to Mount Vernon.  She has made numerous appearances in television and film, including consulting and performing in the CBS mini-series "George Washington."

As Martha Washington, Mrs. Wiseman continues to research and develop all her programs highlighting the life of this most important Lady, designing her period clothing based on original portraits.  Her programs are not scripted; she believes in creating individual presentations that reveal the First Lady in a natural and spontaneous manner.  She invites visitors to come into her company and thus come to know and understand Martha Washington and her life's experiences as George Washington's worthy partner.

TEN THINGS SUCCESSFUL PRESERVATIONISTS KNOW

What makes the difference between success and failure in historic preservation?   As with almost anything else, the difference is a well-informed group of participants.  Ten Things Successful Preservationists Know (SHPO Fact Sheet #13) explains that:

1.  They know the authentic history of their community.
2.  They know which properties represent their community's history.
3.  They know the historic preservation vocabulary.
4.  They know the laws and regulations that facilitate preservation efforts in their community.
5.  They know the roles of all levels of government in preservation projects and    programs.
6.  They know when and how private organizations can assist their local preservation activities.
7.  They know what financial incentive programs really exist for preservation projects.
8.  They know what strategies can encourage preservation projects even when no legal or financial tools apply to the situation.
9.  They know when and how to select a preservation professional and how to use their services.
10.  They know that almost all successful preservation work is locally initiated, locally led, and locally financed.
To obtain a copy of the Fact Sheet, contact the SHPO at (405)521-6249, send an e-mail request to mheisch@okhistory.org or visit the SHPO's website at http://www.okhistory.org/shpo/factsheets.htm.

The Rushmore Four are coming to the Oklahoma History Center!

The Rushmore Four will be presenting a program at the Oklahoma History Center on the evening of April 1, 2010.  The Rushmore Four is not a rock band!  Instead, they are nationally renowned re-enactors who portray the presidents immortalized on Mount Rushmore - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.

The men who will depict Jefferson and Lincoln have appeared at the History Center in the past and were outstanding.  We understand that the Washington and Roosevelt re-enactors similarly are exceptional.  We will provide more details regarding this special event later, but we wanted to encourage you to mark your calendars now for this special evening.

Pioneer Woman Museum and Operation Pioneer Spirit Work Together
by Valerie Haynes

Once a month, volunteers gather in the Education Room at the Pioneer Woman Museum
to organize and package donated items for shipment overseas to our soldiers. The items come from members of the Oklahoma community - individuals, community organizations, scout groups, 4-H clubs, classrooms, homeschool groups, churches, and businesses, just to name a few.

Operation Pioneer Spirit's generous donors bring in needed items throughout the month, and every third Tuesday, the group's army of volunteers arrives to sort the donated gifts. On Wednesday, the army arrives again, bright and early, to put together boxes, and start filling them. Then they label, and mail the boxes overseas. Cash donations are used to pay the postage so that all the boxes go out.

This month, OPS mailed its 4000th box!!!  Not only did OPS mark this milestone, but this month's shipment is the largest shipment in OPS's history! Oklahoma's donations filled 175 boxes with blankets, knit caps, socks, neck gaitors, personal items, magazines, candy, snacks, and other items to keep our troops warm, in body and in spirit!  Now that's showing your Pioneer Spirit, Oklahoma! A list of needed items for our troops is available at the PioneerWoman Museum, or you can visit the OPS website:  www.operationpioneerspirit.com.
