Winter Solstice Walks
Sun, 20 Dec 2009 2:00 PM | Happens: Mondays through Sundays
daily until December 21
Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, Spiro

Archaeologist and manager Dennis Peterson will lead guided tours starting at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Each walk will take about two hours and require a mile of easy walking. Mr. Peterson will tell about this unique prehistoric Native American mound site, the types of mounds, why they were created and why some of the mounds are lined up for the sunsets of the Solstices and Equinoxes. He will tell the history of the excavations, Native American ceremonies and stories, and tales of the unusual happenings associated with the mounds. For those wishing to see the sunset, the 2 p.m. walk will end just about sunset, which is when the alignment will take place. Come out to experience one of the most unique historical sites in the United States as seen through the eyes of an archaeologist.

There is a small fee of $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. No reservations are required unless you are bringing a big group. Be certain to dress for the weather.

The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is the only prehistoric Native American site open to the public in Oklahoma and is administered by the Oklahoma Historical Society. The Center is regularly open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. The Center does close for state holidays. Admission, except for special programs, is free although donations are appreciated. The Center is located 3 miles east of Spiro, OK on highway 9/271 and 4 miles north on Lock and Dam Road. If you need more information or wish to schedule a group or school tour during the Solstice walks or some other time, please call (918)962-2062.

MUSEUMS & HISTORIC SITES
FRIENDS GROUPS

There are twenty support organizations affiliated with OHS museums, historic homes, and sites statewide.  All of them are dedicated to supporting a specific museum or site, and they always can use new members and volunteers.

Memberships are inexpensive but the revenue does help the various operations.  And volunteers are vitally important to site administrators. If you would like to join one or more support group, Please click on the following link, http://www.okhistory.org/outreach/index.html.  There you will find links for each of the museums these groups support.  Clicking on those links will let you access information on the particular museum or site as well as providing contact information for becoming involved in their support group.

Crazy Snake Rebellion
This week on Oklahoma Journeys we examine one of the last Native American uprisings in the history of the United States. The Creek tribe, forcibly removed to Oklahoma in the 1830s, faced in the early 1900s the Crazy Snakedivision and parceling out of their tribal land. The reaction to that loss was mixed. Some tribal members used it to their advantage; some accepted it, and some, the topic of this week's edition, rose-up to fight against it. It's the Crazy Snake rebellion of 1909 this week on Oklahoma Journeys from the Oklahoma Historical Society.
