"Let's Have A Party"
 The Women of Oklahoma Rock & Roll
 
New Exhibit Opening September 19, 2009
The satellite exhibit to "Another Hot Oklahoma Night" will open September 19 at the Pioneer Woman Museum in Ponca City.  It will feature the women of Oklahoma rock & roll.  The exhibit is Bazark Robot and Boyentitled "Let's Have A Party" after Wanda Jackson's big rockabilly hit.
 
The exhibit will open with a free outdoor concert.  The concert is on the lawn so visitors are welcome to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

Later that evening the city of Ponca City will host a concert at the Poncan Theater featuring Wanda Jackson and Becky Hobbs.  To buy tickets contact the Ponca City Chamber of Commerce or the Poncan Theater.
 
About the Museum
The Pioneer Woman Museum was dedicated September 15, 1958, just east of the renowned Pioneer Woman statue.  The museum preserves the legacy of women from all races, creeds and nationalities who have contributed to the development of Oklahoma.
 
The museum's education center features craft demonstrations, special exhibits, an interactive timeline and the Pioneer Woman Walk of Fame.  The museum is dedicated to the enduring spirit of women - past, present and future - who see no boundaries.
Allan Houser Exhibit Ending Soon
 
If you have not had the opportunity to experience "Unconquered: Allan Houser and the Legacy of One Apache Family" at the Oklahoma History Center, you should make an effort to do so before the exhibits is taken down at the end of Houser Statuethis month.  The exhibit features sculptures and other artworks ranging in size from heroic to small, and visitors may use special audio devices while touring to hear the story of more than forty of the major pieces on display.
 
The Houser Family story also is told as a part of the exhibit.  A descendant of both Geronimo and Mangus Coloradus, Allan Houser was the child of prisoners of war in Southwestern Oklahoma who became one of the most renowned American Indian artists of the twentieth century.  Using the artwork of Allan and his sons, Bob and Phillip Haozous, and graphic panels with images and text, the remarkable story of Allan Houser and his family is told dramatically.
 
Houser Buffalo StatueA virtual tour of the Houser exhibit is being developed for the OHS website, but members are encouraged to visit the History Center to see this incredible exhibit in person.
Oklahoma Journeys
 
Michael Dean, Public Relations Officer for the Oklahoma Historical Society, has produced a weekly program for Oklahoma Radio stations that deals with interesting topics relating to Oklahoma History.  Periodically in OHS Extra! we will present a brief synopsis of one of these programs and provide a link that will take you to the complete story.  You will be able to read the transcript or listen to a recording of the radio broadcast.  Here is this week's Oklahoma Journey.
 
Battleship USS Oklahoma Commissioned 1917
 
Battleships and naval superiority are probably not the first things you think of when you hear the word, "Oklahoma," yet in 1917 those ideas and words were on the minds of many Oklahomans. Cherokee Strip Celebration Tea and Open House

To commemorate the Cherokee Strip Land Run, the Cherokee Strip Historical Society and the Oklahoma Historical Society will host their annual Open House on September 19th, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Cherokee Strip Museum in Perry. Refreshments will be served.

Two exhibits will also open September 19th. The exhibit "Bottles! Bottles! Bottles!" will provide a glimpse of the many different sizes and shapes of bottles used to hold everything from perfume to moonshine. The ongoing exhibit "Photography: Images of Our Past" will present a new selection of images that highlight the extensive photographic collection housed at the Cherokee Strip Museum. "Noble County Towns" will showcase early photographs of Noble County communities.
