Imbibe Header

DavidHello to all those who Imbibe,

I just got back from three days in Napa Valley and, from what I've seen, this year has been a struggle.  Many of the producers have held back harvest on their hillside and mountain fruit with hopes that a little more hang-time might bring the grapes to maturity.  With threats of cooler weather and potential rain, many are trying to decide how much to gamble.  In addition to navigating through unpredictable weather, many growers are dealing with a crop size that is reduced 25-40% over recent years.

On my trip, I had the opportunity to taste many of the 2008 and some of the 2009 vintage Cabernets.  Many winemakers and I agreed that the 2008 may surpass the 2007 vintage in both quality and age-ability.  Though the 2007 vintage is drinking well now and will evolve over the next few years, the 2008 vintage will start to open up in 3 to 5 years.  In terms of the vintage to invest, buy 2008/2009's and try the 2010/2011's before you buy for Napa Cabernet.

The highlights of my trip start with the 2008 Revana Cabernet.  It was easily the best wine I have tasted from this property, 96+/100 DD.  This bottling was made by Heidi Barrett (of Screaming Eagle and Paradigm fame) starting this year, with some changes that seem to elevate Revana to the cream of the crop.  As for wines that Imbibe has introduced you to in the past, the 2008 Meteor was showing especially well.  For those that are looking for the best bang for your buck, look no further than the 2007 Policy Vineyards Our Gang Cabernet ($59.99) made by veteran winemaker Thomas Brown, one of the most sought-after consultants in the business.

The last  highlight this week is a wine that just rolled off the truck, the 2009 Epoch Estate Blend.  For those of you who don't remember; this is a winery that I introduced you to back in 2009 and has since been gaining critical acclaim.  Robert Parker scored Epoch's first vintage (2007) 93/100, their second, 92-96/100, and said of Epoch, "the first releases are exceptional...impossible to resist...full-bodied and massive, yet with elegance."  Winemaker Jordan Fiorentine joined Epoch Wines after stints with Araujo and Chalk Hill Vineyards.  Imbibe Wine is proud to be selected as one of only two retailers in the Central Valley to represent this wine, and I can assure you, it will not last long.  The 2009 bottling is a true field blend of Syrah, Grenache, Tempranillo, Zinfandel and Mourvedre.  Very limited, call for yours today! $39.99

Until next time, keep pullin' those corks!
